...a search turned up much fitment and legality info on these barrels but not many performance tests specifically with slugs. I am considering a 12.5" for my 870 but recall reading somewhere in my search about poor performance and slugs "tumbling" from these short barrels? :runaway: .
I am hoping someone can enlighten me as to the accuracy of "bulk" hollowpoint slugs [or any slugs tested for that matter] at "defensive" ranges of say 10 to 25 yards through either the 12.5 or 14" Dlask. As this 870 build will be for wilderness-carry I don't expect it to perform past 25 yds. max with slugs but I need some info to go on as 300+ dollars is alot to spend on looks alone.

P.S. anyone use a SUREFIRE foregrip light with a 12.5" or 14" barrel?...will it work?...thoughts?.

Thx. for viewing,
Mad Mikey.

A Surefire forend will work fine just put a butler creek flip lens cover on her to protect the glass from the muzzle blast when not in use. I've got a 14" Norinco (345$ brand spanking new from Marstar) and there is no slug tumbling even at 35-50m.
For an extra 45$, you get a complete short shotgun that is better finished than the Rem's Express.
Btw, all internals are completely interchangeable.

I orginally had some issues with the slugs tumbling out of my 12.5" barrel from Dlask. However, Remington Sluggers have given me optimal performance and very little evidence of tumbling. 8x12 steel plate at 100m every time.

My DAC barrels are for serious bear defence guns. I have had no problems with tumbling slugs in either the 12.5 or 14" barrels (four total) using several brands (incl. Federal or Winchester) of slugs. As for accuracy I have put three slugs touching each other at 25m, and have even had decent accuracy at 50 and 60m although I don't recall exactly what they were...a serious test with different slugs, test medium and chrono is planned, I just need to find the time.
Cheers

...Can.kesterel can you elaborate on the tumbling problem?, ranges? brand of slug etc. Even with this prob. is the barrel still feasible for "Paper-plate hits" at 25yds.??? Is yours an early vintage Dlask barrel and does that matter? Price and availability of Rem. sluggers? Too many damn questions?? ;) BTW in my search for info your post came up about the whitetail you took with your shotgun. Congrats very impressive!!! :) .
Santa if I ever can afford to get a SUREFIRE, the scope lens cover sounds trick!. I never for once considered the Norc. clone, simply because I played the "Norinco Lottery" once and that was enough for me. Not knocking your shotgun at all, it was an SKS-D that made me lifetime abstinent.

Thx. for views and replies keep 'em coming,
Mad Mikey. :)

As with all guns you have to try different ammo combinations to find what works best in your gun. I haven't had the chance to chrony any slugs but you will be down on velocity with the shorter barrels. The powder in the average shotgun barrel is all burnt around the 18 to 19 inch mark. So you are giving up something but whatever you hit under 50 yards sure won't know the difference thats for sure.

The tumbling was not noticed by me but rather by someone I had testing my shotgun. I do not remember the brands. Range was 50m AFAIK. I found that the remington sluggers are very accurate through my gun, (deer kill zone at 100m) and CT and Wallyworld wants 3.89 for a box of 5. My barrel was not an early production, purchased it 6 or 8 months back. If you are in the London, ON area, I would be more than willing to let you try it out.

...after all this positive info, 12.5" barrel will be purchased late next week. There are is an upside and a downside to this however. Upside is that it is a 20 minute drive from my house to Dlasks shop. :D Downside is I can't take Kestrel up on the offer to shoot his beauty of a shotgun, as he's on the other side of the country!!!
Kestrel, Ike, Ishoot you guys are solid "CGN bretheren" and I thank you again for your info and experience.

Cheers,
Mad Mikey.

I just bought a Dlask 14" 12 gauge barrel for my 870 today from Joe while at the HACS gun show in Chilliwack...

It is now on my gun it's just going to be a couple of weeks before I can get out with it and give it a good work out..

I have to say that so far I am totally impressed with the way it looks and balances...

I told my wife this is her new camp/house defense gun... :)

She didn't argue... :p

Now I just have to put some lighter recoiling 00 Buck loads together for her...

Camp Cook, Glad to see you picked one up.
For a bush gun the size and balance is a thousand times better with the 14" than the 20" guns.
Hope you can make it out to the ATC shoot.
Cheers

haha, I have burned the paint off the top of the light unit on my surefire forend. Thats why I sitched from the 12 to the 14.

I was not impressed, but not unhappy with how slugs performed from it. But basically, for a 00 buckshot to hit something from the 12" barrel, even through an IC choke, it has to be about 10 feet away. That was the kicker for me.

Not a Dlask or OEM Rem. But....

My new (for me) FABARM martial composite is a dandy with no tumbling. I can print much better with my Mossy 590a1 with the ghost rings but that beast has a 20inch brl. The shorty is specifically for hungry beast defense while fishing so it is a CQBeast gun.

HeadDamage...I use an 870 with a 14" Dlask for bear defence.
When in camp or carried in the field it is loaded to capacity with 2-3/4 hollow point slugs exclusively. I do not use any type of shot for defence. I can hit a full 4 litre milk jug of water at 30-35 yds. nearly everytime with this barrel.
I have shot numerous styles of slugs with different loads through various barrel lengths and always come back to cheap 2-3/4' hollow points, reason being they allow for faster follow up shots [less recoil] and when they fragment they are devastating. I believe a member here named "Cankesteral" took a deer this season with his short barreled 870 and could elaborate on accuracy out further.
I did not purchase this barrel to group at 100yds. but from all I have read from other members it's not too bad at range.

Hope I helped, :)
Mad Mikey.

I also have a 14" Dlask on my Brobee 870. I have put various slug manufacturers through this barrel and find that the 2 3/4 Win slugs preform as accurately as you can get from this barrel length.

At 65 yrds, I've grouped 5 slugs into a four leaf clover (I have the video to prove it). 12" x 12" steel plate at 100 yrds. no problem.

I put a bunch of 2 3/4" slugs through my 12.5" barrel with Modified choke... zero problems and accuracy was very good at 50m (no keyholing as mentioned earlier... don't know what that is about).
