dlask m14 goodies pics!

I would say lightly lubed, with a bit of greese for the bolt roller.

If I pick up some MFS .308, am I getting pretty much the same thing - better or worse?

Sadlak pistons are a work of art,I doubt that is your issue . You checked your port alignment so that is ruled out . Is there any slop between the GC and the front band?If not I vote for an ammo change to see if that clears things up.

Satain, what makes you think it's the piston? More info please.
I have noticed on a few 7.62 gas systems of late that there chamber can fit nork pistons. Not all do though. There for if you have sloppy fitting piston you will not have proper vaccum preasure for the gas system to operate properly. Try the piston test and report back.
mikebaker1129 you are correct that Sadlak makes excellent stuff. Altough 7.62 QC seems to be lacking.

Piston drop test - check.

Of note: the top gas hole is slightly smaller in the Sadlak then in the Norc piston. Also, the 7.62 gas plug is very thick. I would love to be able to compare it to my Norc plug, but it vanished somewhere along the line.

Two options to increase gas would seem to be:
1- enlarge top gas hole in piston.
2- enlarge interior dimension of gas plug.

Due to a number of people posting feeding problems with Norc ammo, particularly with chopped M14s, I won't go and change anything yet.

It seems to be a common theme with the Norinco ammo. This would appear to be slightly lower pressure producing ammo. It would be interesting if someone could Crony this ammo as well as mike the diameter of the bullets. Must be a reason why this ammo does not cycle the bolt properly.

The two options mentioned would probably not make any difference in gas pressure IMO since you need more volume and not nessecarily more pressure. The only way I can see to increase volume is to enlarge the port hole in the barrel. This should only apply to a shorter barrel. So far my M-14 is fuctioning 100% since I drilled the hole larger. EVERYTHING ELSE was inspected and tested first though, including several different types of ammo. Some folks seem to be cautions about this mod with good reason. Too much gas volume could cause premature wear. The volume of gas available is determined by the amount that can be forced through the gas port after the bullet passes it and before the bullet exits the barrel. No magic there.

Again, this seems like an ammo problem in this case.

I second the ammo being suspect.
I had some problems with stripping a round but a gas cleaning seemed to have solved that.
Only ran a couple of mags through.

Yesterday it began again after a couple more mags, just the odd time. Fired Federal and MFS without a hitch. Then back to the Norc and it was short stroking every now and then.

I took my chopped Norc out again and blasted through over 130 Norinco rounds with only 1 failure to strip the round out of the mag. I had added only a small amount of lube, but perhaps it helped.

I did notice one difference between my stock Norc gas system and the 7.62 system that I added when I had the barrel chopped. The spindle valve was rock solid tight in the Norc gas cylinder, but now that it is in my new US made cylinder, it is so loose that I can move it with my finder. Gas residue around the spindle valve shows that some gas has been escaping. Perhaps this slight loss of pressure is to blame. I will replace the spindle valve just to be sure.

I don't think that I will have to do any further alterations to my gun. Enough people have had the same issues with Norinco ammo, so I'm going to go with that for now.

There is your culpurtright there. Loss of gas preasure at the spindal value coninsiding with the lower preasure Nork ammo and bingo. Some times it pays just to use the stock parts that the Nork comes with instead of mix matching them with US parts just to say it is a US part. Like I always say if it anit broke don't fix it. ;)
