Dlask Sporter Chambered .920 Barrels

Hello - wondered if anyone has any experience with Dlask sporter chambered 920 barrels. I want to be able to shoot CCI standard velocity and most manufacturers say theirs won't cycle it reliably. I prefer CCI as it is (relatively) affordable and available locally.

I realize I'll be giving up some accuracy vs a Bentz chamber but its mostly for smallbore silhouette (offhand) matches not benchrest shooting.

Don't know how much difference in accuracy there may be between these or a heavy factory take off.

The barrel isn't the place to cheap out and regret it later - I only want to buy it once. Let me know if there may be another option.

Thanks in advance. Tom

Change the charging rod spring to a lighter spring and you shouldn't have any problem shooting CCI SV. Dlask may even carry the springs. I know Kidd sells a kit with three different force springs.

Is your main goal accuracy or more reliable cycling? If its accuracy why pick a feature that is going to be detrimental to this goal?

I've got a dlask barrel and at the time it came with what they called an xtreme chamber, and let me tell you that it is a very tight chamber. That is I could not extract live rounds from the chamber until I upgraded the extractor to a kid version.

However, I am not sure if the xtreme chamber is one in the same with what they are now calling a target chamber. At the time I was under the assumption that the xtreme chamber was in fact tighter than a standard bentz chamber. In my experience this seems to be true as another barrel that I own which has a bentz chamber never had any issues extracting live rounds.

Additionally, as far as cycling has gone for me with the supposed tighter xtreme chamber my rifle has had pretty much no issues that couldnt be attributed to the mags. I usually only shoot with the cheapest ammo I can find and that is quite often winchester, so in that regard the barrel has performed beyond my expectations.

However, that is not to say that in going with the bentz chambered barrel you will have the same problem free experience as me. As we all know, 1022s can be very finicky from one rifle to the next. What works for some does not work for all.

As the poster mentioned above, there are lighter springs that can be purchased to encourage better cycling when using standard and subsonic rounds, dlask is currently selling these for $5 so it probably couldnt hurt to pick one up.

So to reiterate, if accuracy is your main goal, than you will likely want to stick with a bentz chamber, however if you are mainly concerned with promoting reliability than a sporter chamber will likely be better suited for this goal.

Best of luck,
Chem

Also keep in mind that an 18inch .920 barrel may be a little unwieldy for extended off hand silhouette shooting. So one of their shorter barrels may be better suited as it cuts down on making the gun too front heavy.

Will you be using irons or a scope/red dot?

I've got one of his 11" SR-22 barrels which has the sporter chamber. I've got mine set up with a Kidd bolt, extractor, spring ect. and have tested about 12 different types of ammo including the CCI and Eley with absolutely zero failure too feed or failure to eject issues using factory mags. It's been great!

Thanks for the replies -

Chem - Accuracy is the main goal, but I don't want to give up the reliability.

This rifle currently wears an old Nikko Sterling 12X scope - my other bolt gun has a Simmons 6.5- 20X. Hoping to pick up a 24X or better to replace the 12X as this will be my heavy rifle.

Most shooters prefer a little muzzle heavy feel, but I agree. By the end of a 60 shot match and shooting two guns, even the Ruger gets uncomfortable. 16" would be the shortest I would consider. The rifle needs to be under a certain weight (with scope) to be legal in a match. I have a Boyds Blaster coming for it and I will need to verify the weight before getting a barrel/scope.

Chem and 22 forever I maybe misunderstood the CCI problem - I was under the impression it wouldn't fully chamber the CCI rounds due to the bullet shape (forcing band?) in the tighter Bentz chamber. Didn't realize it was an extraction problem.

Jbird - roughly what kind of groups sizes are you getting and at what distance?. I will be shooting from 40m out to 100m.

Here's a pic of a 10/22 I built 2 years ago using a Dlask receiver, all Kidd internals with a 20" Kidd match barrel (only Ruger part in the rifle is the magazine), no problem at all chambering or extracting CCI SV. It does have a problem extracting live Eley Match which is the ammo this one likes, Lapua Center X runs a close second. I'm going to have to take this out as I haven't shot it in over a year.

Hey Manicmechanic,

Here are a couple of range pics taken a few months back where I tried out a variety of ammo shot at 50 meters with a DAR 22 Sporter (16.5) bull barrel. Included in the group shots are some CCI ammo.
I hope that this will give you some idea as to what the barrel is capable of.

you can shoot cci sv's in any 22lr chamber. It's the stingers and velocitors that shouldn't be fired out of a bentz or match chamber. All of my 10/22's cycle cci sv no problem and some are target/match chambers.

The last group I measured at 50yds was .721", not amazing but remember it's only an 11" barrel and that was using Winchester Dyna Point GT bulk ammunition.

I have tested Eley Team which measured .692" @ 50yds however that was done before replacing my trigger which has significantly reduced my groupings and should be tested again to be fair.

I am using a 9x scope which has parallax set at 100yds and could probably get some better results by changing to something proper but all in all I've been very happy with the barrels quality and performance.

50yds 40gr CP Winchester Dyna Point GT .721" (excluding pull)

I have a DLASK DAR-22 with a sporter chamber .920 fluted bull barrel the best group i have done using CCI mini mags 36 gr HP was under 1" at 100 yards.

ive got one of each the Sporter (in 8.5") and the X-treme (which is Bentz in 18.5")

ive shot every ammo i can get ahold of and have not had any rounds get stuck in the Sporter but i wouldnt expect them too as its a standard chamber.
the Xtreme one is the only one that is picky with the longer rounds, but that shouldn't matter anymore as i dont think he is selling the X-treme chambering anymore due to all the morons who kept complaining because they didnt or couldnt understand what a Bentz chambering was.

this here is 20 rounds @ 40 or 50 yards (was a couple years ago, cant remember) freestanding in the rain with CCI blazer with the 8.5" Sporter barrel on a Dlask receiver with kid internals and a timney trigger.

Savagelh - what makes of barrels with target chambers do you have?

Thanks for all the input and the photos guys. Guess I should have mentioned I've put several cases of CCI through that stock rifle/action over the years.

The only ammo that wouldn't reliably feed was HV Yellow Jacket hollow points - can't remember who used to make them.

I was leaning towards a Dlask as its a Canadian company...and I like to support the local talent. I'm just not fussy on a threaded barrel.

Thanks again guys. Tom

they still do the bentz chamber but you have to specifically ask for it and they do give you a warning. and i would recommend dlask as well. they probably provide the best quality parts you are easily able to get in canada in a wide selection. i do wish they offered threaded and non threaded barrel options though. however, i do understand why they dont. with the quantity they sell its hard to double everything up.

you know if you talked to Joe well enough in advance he may be able to not thread a barrel for you next time he is making up a batch.
i know historically he has bent over backwards for me when ive called and talked to him.

you can shoot cci sv's in any 22lr chamber. It's the stingers and velocitors that shouldn't be fired out of a bentz or match chamber. All of my 10/22's cycle cci sv no problem and some are target/match chambers.

You are confusing pressure with function.

Joe recommends that NO Hyper Velocity loads be used in his target chambers (pressure issue)... the use of tighter ammo, such as most of the CCI line, is a "functuon" issue... which as others have said may cause feeding and extraction problems... including the SV's the OP is asking about... I have done builds with more than two dozen Dlask barrels, of all chamber persuasions.

So I bought a 12.5" sporter chamber bull barrel used on here. Used ownership-wise, but basically a new unused barrel.

Over 200 rounds, and had to cycle the charging handle manually every time. Used Winchester 555, American eagle high velocity, and Winchester super X. None fed reliably, and I made some metal shavings from somewhere, I can't find the precise source. Assuming it was metal being shaved off the head of bullets. Stovepipes, fail to extract, and misfires were all encountered. 90s Ruger receiver, 90s original hammer spring and metal trigger guard. (Meaning non-plastic parts:)

I sent Dlask an email asking if this was normal until break-in, and got zero response. I even offered to drive it to him to inspect and give me his opinion, and stated I was NOT looking for warranty service.

Is this a charging spring being too strong, the tight tolerances of a dlask sporter chamber versus OEM, or what?

Any ideas / suggestions welcome, here or via PM.
