Do all Rem 760's like it rough?

My old Rem 870 Wingmaster pump shotgun allows me to ever so quietly "snick" a round into the chamber with nary a sound to alert the nearby wildlife.

So when I got my 760 pump rifle in .308 I kinda thought I could do the same thing. Of course the rifle's action is totally differently than the shotgun action. As it turns out, to rotate the bolt and lock the slide on the 760 you've got to slam 'er shut with at least some mild vigour. I find this a bit disconcerting after I've ever so quietly slipped into my favourite deer hunting spot.

Is "Wham bam, thank you ma'am!" the way it is with all 760's?

You should see how the older Rem 14's and 141's need to be operated. Pump em hard like you own them. Otherwise they won't catch and stay shut as you have likely noticed!!!

My 7600 loves it rough. Only when I start treating it like a lady will she act up for me. Love the rifle though!

Yes the rem pump rifles need to be worked hard. You gotta rack them as my father always said.

maybe your marlin is, but I've hunted and shot at the range with a BLR .308, a '94 30-30, and an old marlin .44 my dad has, and haven't had any such problems.

Pretty much every gun I have used required that you open and close it with AUTHORITY!! That is, if you want to be certain it will do what it's told.

I had a Model 14 living with me for a short time. She likely wasn't very elegant even in her youth and she was really showing her age. Definately ridden hard and put away wet.

True, but you can easily and quietly move the hammer down, to half cocked or to fully cocked once you have a round in the chamber.

The 760 has a plunger type ejector in the bolt face which causes some resistance to final bolt closure. (when a round is being chambered) Hope that explains why it is hard to close on occasion.

ill just say that i have been hunting in a club thats just pump hunters. rem pumps. some old guys with 760 but most with 7600. i aswell have a 7600. i removed the rubber o ring on the slide rail and instantly, it was only half as hard to close. the o ring is there so the rail does not wear down, but honestly its been a few years now, and my pump shows no sign of wear. the ring get in the way because it swells when it gets oil on it, and usually replacing them will just result in a harder close, because it rolls on itself. give it a try and lemme know.
