Do any of you shoot a Remington 7400 ?

I finally got a chance to shoot it about 10 days ago. It far exceded my expetcations. I shot factory 150 grn Rem Corlocks.Winchester power points and Federal vital shocks. I got it to zero in 3 shots with the remingtons, then shot a 3 shot group all holes inside a quarter. (2" high at 100 yds) I then proceded to set out milk jugs of water at 150,200,250 and 300 yds. I killed each one with one shot ! Minute of deer in my book. My only complain is the magazine is hard to insert and remove. I did not shoot any shells but the remingtons. I took it to a farmer friend that lets me hunt last Sunday and he called tues said he killed a 14 point with 28 inch beams with one shot in the throat patch at 196 yds(rangefinder) so I guess it works ok. never had any jams but have only shot sdhot 10 to 15 shells throug it. The Jam-o-matic title came from the Rem 742's ,the bolt head rideds on a rail inside the reciever, if it warps or is shaved down from use they jam and there is no fixing them. But Rem. will gibve you a trade in allowance toward a 7400.

I own a 30-06 carbine, and have not had a single problem with it in over 100 rounds. I also Fired 17 shots out of one 7400 in 308 last weekend and guess what? NOt a single FTF or extraction problem.

Seems of the 20 odd 74 series rifles I've fired, the Jamomatic seems to be the exception rather than the rule.
They're half the price of a BAR, and nearly half the weight.
there are easily 20 times more 74 series rifles in circulation in canada than BAR's.
This would explain 20 times more trips to the smith.

As Bear said, Big difference between the 742's and 7400's
And I think they have a worse rap than they have ever deserved.

And dont let anyone tell you the triggers are ####.
They are easily adjusted with replacement springs.
My trigger on my 7400 is 1lb 15 oz's :wink:

The 7400's are less likely to be problematic than a 742 but I have seen many that just don't function properly... brand new out of box... jamamatics :(

I owned one for a couple years, and all i got was jam-ups, but on the other hand i have a friend thats got one chambered in 308, and hes had his for about 10 years i believe , and he rarely jams up. hes shot it so often, the barrel had to be cut down before the action wore out.
 
:oops: Haven't ever had a 7400, but had a low ser# model 4. Relly nice rifle and shot pretty well-.75" @ 100yrds with Remington factory 180gr SP. Never jamed but didn't like hand loads. Hot loads would sometimes rip the head off the cartridge! :shock: No ruptures, just really hard on the brass! That was in my younger and dumber days! Wish I'd never let it go. :cry: Hind sight is always 20/20. Did trade it for a nice .300H&H though. :)
 
I owned one for 3 years and put roughly 1 box of rounds through it. The thing jammed once the first time I used it because I was babying the action and kept a bit of strain on it as it loaded the first round. I was testing how quiet I could be loading this rifle in the bush and that's a mistake. From then on I pulled her back and let go to load (like normal) and never jammed since. Keep her clean and go REAL easy on the oil and you'll be as happy as I was.

I made a mistake in selling her and I am looking for another right now. Good bang for the buck in my opinion!
 
I've got two in 30-06, a model four and a carbine. The only time the carbine jams is using 180's and with four rounds in the mag or if I don't let the bolt slam ahead when loading it. The model four works better as far as jamming. It's a sweet gun and I will never part with it. The short barrel carbine seems a bit more accurate, but I've never done a side by side comparison with the same ammo.
 
I have a 35 Whelen. No cycling issues at all as long as residue doesn't build up in the chamber. It has the Timney trigger fix, Uncle Mike's sling swivels and Pachmayr recoil pad. Surprisingly accurate.

The bolt dust cover will develop a tear eventually requiring a replacement.

Run some Remington Cor locks through it and as mentioned run it almost dry.
Use oil sparingly and you should have no problems with it.
I never experienced the tear mentioned, but eventually plastic will break down over time.
Best to have a spare ready for the inevitable.
I found out the hard way when cleaning the inside of the action that there will be some sharp edges along where the action bar runs.
Be ready for a painful paper cut cause when it happens is either with solvent being in use or some gun oil/ lube.

Takes more than a few rounds to make this happen. The bolt handle will eventually put a small tear in the plastic dust cover, and when it gets long enough it will jam the bolt open. A replacement cover is only a few bucks. My rifle ate 2 of these so far. Something to keep an eye on.
