do bears attack you in your sleep?

If a guys worried about bears in camp do all the right stuff (keep a clean camp, etc) and get a dog(s) and or keep you fire buring all night. The bears might be near but they won't bother you. I had a Great Pyeraness (Big white dog/Flock Guardian) for 11years that was great to bring camping/fishing/hunting. I could sleep well at night and when/if I left camp I woundn't have to worry about a thing from 4 or 2 legged pests.

Had one go through the tent I was in with four other fellows on a fishing trip.
I was the youngest, they were all much older and drank, (but only to excess!) and snored so loud, it was like a chainsaw convention.
The bear went through the new door it made in the tent, stepping on us in the process, then out the other new door it made.
Apparently bears ears are sensitive to hysterical screaming.

As to the original question, there was an instance not long ago (this spring, IFIRC) where a married couple in the Alaska interior were ambushed in their tent and killed by a brown bear/grizzly bear. Both were woods wise people, taking all precautions to avoid attracting bears. I believe this was discussed at the time it happened here on CGN. So, yes it can happen.

Another important consideration is if you/wife/girl friend/wing girl/friend with benefits is menstrating. Bears are attracted to that. Wasn't there a couple killed in Alaska a few months ago as they slept beside a river? They were on a canoe trip, IIRC. A loaded gun was found in their camp. I think that you may have a better chance at shooting your left nut off in your sleep than you would a determined bear. A dog or a perimeter warning system would be a nice way to help your odds. My friends had a cabin in the NWT on a small peninsula. They used an electric fence to keep the grizzlies out.

Apparently they also had a loaded 45/70 marlin and never had the chance to use it.

I think the answer to the original question is, sure it can happen but with a few common sense camp pecautions it can be greatly minumized.

1) Keep a clean camp
2) Hang all animals away from your camp
3) Keep in the tent the best bear defence which is a reliable semi auto 12 guage shotgun with the plug removed and loaded to the nuts with alternating slugs and buckshot.:)

More imporantly!!

If you leave beer and whiskey unattended in your camp, you will attrack humans...the best thing to do is store liquor and beer accordingly to avoid this.

If you drink it all then you'll snore so goddam bad the bears won't make it into the camp.

I've no worries.:D

I keep looking at this topic and thinking "Yeah, every time I go to sleep, I keep getting mauled by bears!" :)

The one and only time I went camping was at Sandbanks. There were no bears there that I was aware of, but drunk teens and a guy with a classical guitar attacked me with noise.

Actually - the 12 guage will tend to deal with that just as effectively.

(man - they're just so versitile!)
