I am considering buying one of the brass deflectors that mounts via the rear sight: Anyone have comments on these? Do they require a bit of bending to work? Do they throw brass in a nice neat pile for reloading?

The one I had did not make "nice neat piles "! Instead of spraying cases up and forward/ to the side, they just went forward and to the side ! Maybe you want to look into getting a brass CATCHER instead.

Try the ejector mod in "Helpful hints to DIY..." sticky. It works pretty well but you need carbide or cobalt drill bits for the vent holes - crappy tire bits won't cut it. If you just do the receiver cut out it will keep most cases from smashing your scope.

why not just do the ejection port mod ? , remove the angle make it square and move it a little bit closer of the rear and now the sks will éject mostly a 2-3 oclock

Ejector port mod is the way to go, like marc and dad said. It's super simple and if you have a dremel tool it will be a breeze. I did that on mine and it works great.

The receiver material is soft. You can do this easily with just hand files in about 10 minutes. A chain saw file (1/8 round) works well to make the bottom radius.

Dremel milling cutters will work, but do the finishing work by hand.

A bottle of cold blueing cost about $8 and will last forever (I have a bottle I bought in 1990) - still works fine.

The gas port mod is more difficult because you need special drill bits. These bits a fragile and it is difficult to avoid breaking them if you try to free hand this at the range with a portable drill. IMO this mod isn't worth the trouble.

What is used to finish and smooth off, I imagine the chainsaw files would not leave a smooth finish? I had no idea how soft the reciever steel was!

Finish with wet sandpaper (320 or 400 grit). Wrap a piece of sandpaper around the 1/8 file for the radius. Not really necessary tough. A file cut file leaves a finish similar to the original.
