Do comps really work? who likes them?

I have been thinking about buying a comp for a pistol, (as I have always liked robocop's Auto 9)
and was wondering if anyone had a comp like this, or who would be interested in one?

I like the look, but holsters might be hard.... I guess a kydex would work.

What is the CGN consensus?


I was thinking for a CZ Shadow... since I recently sold my beretta :(

I've never had one but allways wanted one, not for any kind of recoil reduction bit soley for looks because looking cool allways trumps function.
 
I like them, but they don't really work unless you pushing alot of powder.

I had several comped 45's and it was more just a smoke deflector. Didn't really notice any muzzle difference.
 
I think you can still get bushing compensators for the 1911. I have one floating around on my bench. Even with 45-08 loads I never noticed much difference but it did look cool.

Compensators do work - but you have to have a cartridge with sufficient gas volume for them to really do anything. .38 Super or 9mm major, for example.

Anything else is cosmetic and will only really function as a weight on the end of your pistol.

But if you’re into “futuristic” look for you pistol - absolutely do it! Firearms aren’t always about competition or preparing for some SHTF scenario.

And you can probably use a “race” holster - Double Alpha - that only secures the pistol around the trigger guard. Or a CR Speed that connects at the trigger guard and the tip of the comp.
 
Hate, Hate, HATE any gun that redirects gases to reduce recoil. Brakes, compensators, porting, whatever you call it, it all annoys the living shît out of me. I can handle recoil and muzzle jump, just get that godammed extra noise and blast out of my face.
 
The one on my S&W V460 works great! It really helps to make an enjoyable experience out of shooting what is essentially a heavy High powered rifle round out of a pistol.
 
I would try one but where do you get one for a Shadow in Canada?

Only one I have fired was the glock 40C. same ammo on the same day shooting it and a S&W .40 non compensated, all I noticed was that I had more spots to clean. Would be nice to shoot a non compensated gun that was the same; however I think that the smith and the glock are similar enough for me to compare that function.
 
If you fire a compensated gun with regular ammo, you would seldom notice any effect of the compensator. As previously mentioned you need excess gas to make the comp work. For example, I have a S&W M&P that I installed a threaded barrel and a compensator. The gun would cycle with slightly higher power bullets or a weaker recoil spring, but the barrel would still rise. As expected, increasing the powder charge by 60-80% (different powder - slower burning), the compensator held the barrel nearly flat. Remember that once you add a special barrel and a compensator, you are most likely using rounds that exceed SAMI specs and you have to make them yourself. All open shooters fully understand this!

Rather than experiment with a poor man's open gun, it is usually better to just buy a purpose built compensated gun. The S&W worked really well, but the vibration was too much for the aluminum compensator and it slowly stripped the threads causing it to become misaligned and have bullets rubbing on the comp on the way out that lead to very large inaccuracies! When you add in all the parts to bring the trigger to sub-2lbs, add an optic, magwells and other items, you are about the same price as a used open gun, except that the open gun will outperform any Glock, S&W, or Beretta that has been turned into a Frankenstein.

If you search my threads you can see the S&W as it was transformed. If it had remained usable, I probably would still use it as a BUG, but it ain't no STI or Infinity.

i like them.
ive got a Glock 17C and i really like how it keeps the muzzle down when fast shooting.

ive also had the opportunity to try one on a S&W 460V and would NOT shoot that gun without it on there!!!

back to my own guns i also run one on my 460rowland and that makes it a dream to shoot.

im thinking about getting one for my Glock40 10mm because i have and want to shoot high pressure ammo with it.

i also have a couple on some 22's just purely for looks and i must admit i really like the looks of them.

so ya, for looks and for actual function i like them.
