Do I need a go no go gauge to mount a .257 Roberts A.I. barrel?

I think I need go no go gauge .. but I'm not sure .. (I apologize for my ignorance, but I'm really out of my depth here)

Background:
I have a recent (i.e. FN USA-made) Winchester Model 70 EW in .270 .. and I acquired a Shilen SS barrel in .257 Roberts A.I. to customize it.
But my local Victoria gunsmith says he can't mount the Shilen barrel on my EW because he does not have the right equipment.

Questions:
Do I need to buy a go no go gauge for a .257 Roberts A.I. to make this happen?
And if so, what would a typical price be?

I ask because it's very expensive then I'll just sell the rifle (I own another model 70 in .270, an SS Fwt) and the Shilen barrel.
Thank you in advance ...

-Dennis

Was the Shilen barrel formerly on a model 70? If not it may need to be threaded to suit your action; headspace checked for which you need the guages referenced and most likely a reamer to make the adjustment. Can't see this being an economical project. You can check Brownell's for costs however they're in US dollars and there's the nasty shipping fees and HST. Ron

All AI chambers can be safely head spaced by making sure a factory virgin brass closes with a definite firm feeling... and the standard go gauge is used as a no go gauge for the AI chamber.

That being said, to correctly set the headspace to an accurate standard an AI go gauge should be used.

Well, that is good news ... Thank you, Guntech

Apparently,
[1] Both .257 Roberts regular go gauges and .257 Roberts A.I. go gauges are available from PT&G for under $50 US each.
[2] Complete .257 Roberts A.I. gauge sets (go / no go /field) are also available from PT&G for $100 US.

Even with exchange/tax/shipping/duty/etc. added on to the price, this is much cheaper than I expected!

Followup question:
So that a gunsmith can use a no go gauge and a go gauge, should I buy package [1] or [2] ?
Or, to get the work done accurately, do I only need the A.I. go gauge?

And thanks again ..

You need to remove the existing barrel and install the replacement barrel. If the thread fit is the same the barrel still has to index so the extractor slot lines up... once the barrel is indexed then the headspace can be accurately measured. If the headspace is incorrect on the short side a chambering reamer may also be required.

Find a smith with a reamer and he will probably also have the gauges...
