If I purchase a Marlin 1894, (.44 magnum caliber). Would I need a restricted gun licence to purchase the ammunition. I live in Ontario

Not right now no.
I have read there is some silly talk of making some chanes to the ammunition act in Ont, but the leislation has so many holes in it, I don't see how it can fly.

My 2c:

I'd suggest getting it anyways. Just having it keeps your options open, and supports our cause. Even if you don't think you want a restricted, it's worth having it "just because".

There are non restricted guns that use 9mm and other "pistol" ammunitions. To make them restricted ammo would be stupid.

No you don't. But get your RPAL anyway. Then pick up a .22 pistol and head to the range for some inexpensive shooting fun :) Oh...and purchasing a stripped AR15 lower (for a build ;)) never hurts either
