Looking at getting a 17 HM2 to round out the rimfire collection. Have 22 L, Mag and HMR, so the HM2 is the next one I guess. ;)
Other than plinking, what hunting use is there for the HM2, it seems like a nice fast and accurate, but light round? Bunnies and grouse ??
Seems like they have lost their appeal - lots available at discounted prices and I wonder about ammo availability in the future.
Considering either an NEF single shot or a Savage MK II GVL.
Comments appreciated.
Thanks.

I recently started thinking that HMR popularity might lose to the HM2 because of the slightly lower cost of HM2 ammo. Either way, if you own one caliber already I wouldn't bother buying the other until a clear winner emerges since they accomplish the same thing.

HMR ammo is much more readily available than HM2. I think I remember reading that some manufacturers aren't making HM2 anymore.
But it would be a good excuse to buy another gun:D.
As far as hunting for bunnies and grouse, i would just stick to the good ol' 22lr just my $0.02

why exactly did they make the hm2 after the hmr? what were they marketing it as? something between hmr and 22lr?

I think it was a .17 that could be sold on the same chassis as the .22LR models, that was the big sell point on the corporate front.

I was pretty exited about the Mach2, until I saw the price of a box of shells.

Lesse here. same money. 150 rounds? 500 rounds?

I'll keep buying bricks of .22, thanks!

Cheers

I guess if you didn't have a .22, and you were looking for a rimfire, a mach 2 might be ok. But it's a .22 necked down to .17, so ??? why have both. shoot .22 and be happy. For longer ranges get an HMR, the mach 2 just seems pointless to me....But I'm all for buying a new gun, so if ya gotta, ya gotta!!

Yes, go for it---all of the negativity comes from the ones that haven't had any experience with one:redface:

It's rather amusing how opinions are formed from hearsay:cool:

how does it compare to the hmr and 22lr? from what i see the price for ammo is around half of hmr though still like 3x that of 22lr. i think it'd make a neat gopher getter if it can reach out further than 22lr and close to hmr.

People come here and ask for opinions and advice. Don't want to make an expensive mistake and to learn from others.

The Mach II is a neat little caliber. Great starter rifle/handgun for new shooters or very young shooters. Take a popcan and shake if for 10 seconds. Set at 50 yards. Add a .17 round.................

Thanks for all the comments - pro and con.
Still undecided - do I NEED another rifle - No. Do I WANT another rifle - Yes. Will I tell the Wife it is NEEDED for a particular hunt (she never objects if I justify it with "Well, that calibre is really the best for shooting "insert edible game here" ) - probably. :D
SIR has the single shot NEF's in HM2 for $149 I think. Not much to waste if I don't like it. Concerned about ammo costs tho' here in Vancouver - $9.99 a box of 50. THat's 4 x 22, not much less than 22 mag and really not too much less than the $12.99 HMR.

i recommend the .17 M2-i have a savage-it depends what kind of shooting you want to do. At the farm I prefer to actually take the m2-prettty much guaranteed 1 shot 1 kill at ranges the .22 can't touch-and they don't know where it's coming from-if you always buy the ammo in bulk you save even more and then it's worth the fun factor-but on the windy/overcast crappy days where i don't mind taking potshots i take my ruger.:):sniper:
