I think my hunting rifles are complete for the time being, but I want your opinion. I have a ruger 10 22. A sako 85 3006 (scoped), a tikka arctic 308 (irons), benelli supernova 12G and a beretta a400 12G. There might be another hunting rifle that I can neither confirm nor deny if it exists... I know there will always be that want for one more, but I woefully lacking in any area of hunting?

Yes. You have basically have 3 kinds of guns, with a couple duplicated. There are many holes.

You have no varminter, no bush gun, no light bird gun, no open plains rifle, and no heavy rifle. Also nothing that would be good for introducing a youth or lady into hunting or shooting.

Yes you need more, in addition to the ones Battlerifle pointed out, you’re missing a quad gun, hiking gun, bad weather gun, loaner, big bore, etc etc, if you know how many you have then you don’t have enough

Thanks for the reply. You're right about the varminter. A light bullet in my 308 could do the job in a pinch but not well. I don’t really have time to hunt coyotes anyway but that wasn't included in the question, so fair point. I am a priest so don't plan on introducing a youth or a lady to shooting. I have nieces and nephews but that is a job for my brothers.

I am not sure what you mean by open plains rifle, can you clarify?

Finally are heavy magnums really necessary?

You actually didn't tell us anything about what kind of hunting you do, and asked about "any area of hunting", so yeah, I feel the hive has free reign to pile on.

An open plains rifle is something for shooting deer, antelope or similar at distances over 250m. Think .25-06, .270 Winchester, 7mm Mag.

If you shoot big animals like elk, bear, buffalo or in Africa, then something bigger than a .30-06 is definitely necessary.

Yeah of course you had free range to pile on. It was a vague question, that is why I said fair point. I have shot black bear and elk with my 3006 it did the job just fine granted I have only got one of each. But I have only been hunting for a few years that is why I am asking to learn. To clarify I mainly hunt in stands or in sheds because I usually hunt alone so I don't often have someone else to push bush.

1, you don't have an intermediate cartage gun.
2, you don't have a backup or lend to a buddy gun.
3, you don't have a good upland o/u.
4, not sure if you have a slug barrel.
5, this should never be a question so the answer is yes, you need more guns, alot of guns!

As you are appearing to be a 30 cal fan, and seem to hunt at shorter to medium ranges on game you can handle by yourself (if I am hearing you correctly), I would say you are missing a good lever action in 30-30! These just plain fun to carry, hunt with and shoot, and will handle almost all of the game you are hunting out to 150 yards, even open sighted.

You need 1. A lever gun in 30-30win 2. A varmint gun 3. A bolt or lever 22lr
Fill those voids and then you can bump up your numbers with other areas on speciality.

It really depends if you are into firearms as a hobby / collector ; or if you just want the basics . If you want the basics , all you really need is a 308 or 30-06 , a 12 gauge with a 28 inch barrel and assorted chokes , and a 22 rifle . If you want more specialized shooting , then the options are limitless . You may just want to keep what you have , and then add a 223 ; and you should be set for life as far as the basics go . My Grandfather had 8 kids , owned a farm , and hunted extensively to feed his family ; and he had three guns . A Winchester 30-30 , a Winchester 32 Special , and a 12 gauge double barrel ; and he hunted moose , bear , deer ,upland birds , and varmints extensively . He never even had a scope , he just used the same three guns for everything .

I think you have your basic options covered nicely. Your Sako 30-06 is about as versatile and appropriate for Saskatchewan big game as you can get. No need for "bigger" when hunting elk or moose or bears. Your .22 LR and 12 ga guns are very versatile too. But if we are looking for "gaps" and for my Saskatchewan hunting, I'd also want a .22 magnum for jack rabbits, beavers and varmints too big or too far away for the .22 LR. - Or a .223. And I'd want an upland bird hunting shotgun, something a bit lighter for long walks and more responsive for fast flushing birds than either of your 12 ga. which are good waterfowl and pheasant/sharptail guns. Think forest grouse, or huns. A 20 ga. double would fit that role.

If it was me
Id pick up a cz 452 in 22lr or anschutz 1416 and top it with a good scope
A cz sxs 12gauge for upland birdies
A 223cal rifle for all round plink,target,varmint
Sks for cheep ammo n fun
A good pellet gun for the backyard or basement.. to get all the trigger time you can get

Need anything? Nope what you have will cover this continent handily. But heck yeah you should buy some more guns! Nobody should be without an accurate 223

You have enough guns for hunting anything in Canada, unless you decide to hunt for brown bears or some such thing, then I’d want a bigger gun. If you really want to add to that list, I’d look at 3 things. A bush gun of some
flavour (I like BLR’s), a .223 for varmint and plinking and a 20 gauge shotgun for birds. But if your satisfied with what you have, your all set!
