Do I need to be a member of a gun club before buying a restricted firearm?

I'm looking at buying a pistol now that I have my Restricted PAL. But, I have not yet joined a gun club. If I am a collector, then I don't need to be a member, right? What makes me as a collector? If I'm not a member of a gun club, does that automatically make me a collector? Do I need to become a member of a gun club _before_ I buy a pistol?

You are able to purchase as a collector, but not able to shoot so they never leave your home. I'm not positive but I think without a club membership you are classified as collector by rcmp. Will be on your app for your license when you apply with rcmp. If you have your rpal card should be on the back or paperwork that came with it if you are a collector or what range you can shoot at. As for purchasing a pistol , you are good to go with your rpal card.Need a temp att to transport once you intend to pick up. A call to cfo and then info to the retailer. I have heard that some retailers will not sell to individuals online without club membership. Clear as mud right! Lol

Are you ever planning to shoot it?
 
buying restricteds

this is how it works
you don't have to be a member of a club to buy a restricted
you just have to have a pal marked restricted
so when you buy a restricted firearm you are then asked for the reason that you want it.
you say collection, after you've bought 4 you can become a bonified collector.
you are asked questions about the firearms, history, functioning etc.
this is to prove that you are not just accumulating firearms. or you just want
one to shoot in illegal places.
once you become a member of an approved club, and you apply for an att,
your att can be approved to include all restricted firearms in your collection.
you can then take them to your club.


been there done that still doing that. :)

im in qc and because i have more then 10 they sent me a hard cover ledger
to help me keep track of what i have. i don't know if the other provinces do this.

all this also applies to prohibs as well, if you have some.
 
Just to add to this, each Province's CFO has their own criteria for issuing an ATT.. They should all just issue the ATT, but sadly that is not the case. Best thing would be to visit a local gun store and ask them, they should be able to help you out.
 
"...I'm in QC..." With respect, most of what you've said doesn't apply or reflect what the law says or what 'policy' is anywhere else. Ontario's CPFO insists you belong to a club for them to do a transfer. Their theory is that since you can't shoot anywhere but at an approved range, you must have a club membership to shoot.
"...What makes me as a collector?..." You put 'collector' as the reason for having restricted firearms on your application. Also causes you to give up some of your Charter rights.
 
I do want to shoot it at a club, but I haven't become a member yet. Was just wondering if I had to take care of that _before_ buying. I am in ontario, so from the sounds of that last post, I will need to sign up with a gun club before buying.

If you intend to shoot you will have to belong to a club. Not a easy task as there are not enough clubs with available membership. Meaning each club is only allowed so many members according to cfo. The club I belong to is allowed only 100 members and is almost always at a max. When there is a opening some of the new members are from as far away as 100km because there are no clubs in their area or membership is at a max. At our club they require a police back ground check then a rpal test and 6 supervised safety shoots! A pile of hoops! BS I know, welcome to firearm ownership in bantario! The only reason I wrote my rpal was so I could purchase and use some WW 1-2 pistols. That being said fun, but I still enjoy the old longguns more. The government almost takes the fun out of ownership (their intent). But once you are a member and through the hoops its all done. Small fee to do something most never even realize is in their capability of doing. (firearm ownership of pistols)

There are clubs that have a pay a fee for the weekend to shoot. Likely near GTA. Never been to one. Not sure how the atts work for those clubs (which are a must for transport) Hope someone can chime in on the pay to shoot clubs. Good luck and keep the sport alive.

in ontario all you have to do is indicate which club you are planning to join for the registration information. I didn't join a club until 2 months after my first purchase.
 
In BC you need a range membership to get a ltatt... That said they also drag transfers where the recipient does not have an ltatt... That said also drag their feet on your ltatt without a pending transfer or existing possession of a restricted.

I am not sure but i think to be a "collector" you need to check a special box on your rpal application.

Its much easier to just get a range membership, buy a gun, then apply for the ltatt over the phone and mention your pending transfer.

Is that the box where you need to check what you intend to do with firearms within the next 5 years? I hope they don't give me collectors status on my PAL because I checked off the collecting box not knowing what having collector status meant. I just thought collecting meant having more than a couple guns, I don't want my house subject to random searches.
