Do I Need/Want a 378 Wby?.... PHOTOS UP

Had a Remington 700 XCR (way to light of a gun) in .375Rum and it was downright nasty. Handloaded 270grainers at 3000fps. Let a couple buddies shoot it for fun, one his hat went flying and the other thought he tore a muscle in his chest. .378 Bee is likely worse. It was fun to tinker with but couldn't consistently group with it due to the recoil, not for me. If you think you need it, why not.

Hilarious - pretty much my expereince with my same 700 XCR in 375 RUM.

300 grain TSX's @ 2950 out of a rifle that light is killer.

But I later added 40 oz of lead shot to the stock (fore and aft) and it changed everything. Now it "just" kicks like an H&H.

The hat flying off the head thing, I can still see it happening to my buddy...and the look on his face, part shock, part hurt, part trying not to laugh...

Yep, know the feeling, my old 602 in 450 Ackley used to remove my muffs and shooting glasses every shot with a 500 gn @ 2550 fps............and it weighed 10 lbs.........

Hunt NL........what are you interested in? Got pretty much one or two or five of everything from 20 cal to 50 cal EXCEPT 27 cal..........

Looking for a donor action. What is the OAL for the Penguin? Will it fit in a short action if there isn't long 160 gr bullets in the x55 case?

I guess it is better if you reply on the .234 thread.

Mine is built on an Enfield P14. Weighs about the same, kicks like a pissed off mule. Still like it though. - dan

At sometime or another I have owned all of the Weatherby magnums, the .378 is in a class of its own, I have let people shoot the .460 and then the .378, most preferred the .460, if they had a choice they would not own either, even as a gift. The .460 was about 1.5 lbs heavier and had the Pendelton muzzle brake system, still a very heavy recoil, more of a big push rather than a snap. The .378 with its lighter barrel and no brake was was not a fun rifle to sight from the bench, recoil was heavy and fast, more of a quick snap than a push and I have read about several .378 users that ended up with considerable damage to their trigger finger if they did not have the rifle firmly gripped. When asked by several of the people who had fired both of my big bores, which cartridge was my favorite, I replied the .243, I use it for everything and it has never let me down, also the recoil is much more manageable, I told them I only own the big guys for the fun of watching someone else getting hammered by the vicious recoil.

Listen up that Euro Wetherby 378 is a steal ! If I already didn't have my Deluxe I would have bought it in a second!!
This summer was my first with the 378, and man did I have fun , shooting paper and steal! The recoil is more than the H&H for sure but not unreasonable .
Shot mostly 285 grain Speer GRandslam 300 grain Serria Gamekings wich performed the best! If you get one buy atleast 3 or 4 lbs of powder as it goes fast :)
Knocked down 3 metal hanging plates along with the stand with one 285gr Speer GrandSlam!!!
Great calibre and you don't need know Effin brake!

You need to read the whole thread, I have shot a couple 378s and shot and owned many larger and heavier recoiling rifles...........recoil is not the issue. I have so many guns that I don't have time to work up loads for them all now, and there is nothing that I'd hunt with the 378 that I don't have covered with another cartridge already............it's more just a want thing, kinda like a 577 NE...........

you are a one tough dude Douglas, too tough for, well you know what! Huge helpings of recoil = me going home fast! Happy shooting, if possible!

Well, let's see my 375 H&H drives 270s at over 2900 fps with a 24" tube, my 9.3X300 WM drives 270's over 3000 fps from a 26" tube, my 375 Wby, I have on good authority (Why Not?) will drive 270s at 3100, I figure the big Wby, when loaded appropriately should easily get 3300 fps with 270s or about 3150 with 300s...........whatch y'all think? Well it does have a 26" barrel...........;);):rolleyes:

I have fired 2 different ones and didn't find either particularly obnoxious. One of them I rechambered for a guy and then fired 20 rounds from it (factories) and I don't remember it being too savage, no where near my 450 Ackley or even an old 416 Rigby I shot a few times. Yeah the price of brass is somewhat prohibitive, but then I think a guy wouldn't need much more than 50 for a rifle like this, not like you're going to go out and dust off a 100 in an afternoon.

I don't know I'm pondering............I don't need it, I can't justify it, but I've always had this little voice saying I should have one just for entertainment value............it's a lot of fun letting guys try it at the range........my 450 Ackley was most entertaining that way, as is my 470.............

Hmmm! all you really need now is Gatehouse approval and you can go get it Douglas ! ;) LOL :) RJ
