Do I re-centre a used scope?

I put an old 4X Bushnell Scopechief on my Winchester .22 Hornet last night.

It came off my 270 and it worked well enough to shoot two deer last year, but I was wondering, (seeing as it was used when I got it) if it would be wise to dial the adjustment knobs all the way to the end and then back again halfway so as to start off with maximum adjustments possible.

No....boresight it or as i do,sight in first at 25yds with a big target.

Assuming that your bases are adjustable, you may as well center the adjustments before you mount it, then bore-sight it for windage with the bases. Scopes work better optically when run close to center and the adjustments have a better chance of moving in the increments indicated. It's not so much about maximizing adjustment available as eliminating the need for much adjustment at all.

start by having the rings profesionally aligned and lapped....

Put a mirror on the objective lens and re-set it, to zero so to speak.
