You mentioned hunting and target shooting for a 700 in 308. To do both well there is a bit of a compromise. The NF are excellent scopes. Built like tanks, and do everything well. The price is the only negative. The Sightron SIII I will someday buy for target scopes. Great reviews, glass and tracking are said to be excellent. Finally they have some reticles that I like.
Here's another suggestion. Zeiss Conquest 6-20x with Rapid Z1000 reticle Or the 800 etc. Lesser magnification ones are also available. The glass on mine compare to my NF scopes. The reticle is etched, works very well and the scopes track perfectly. Look for a deal on these. With the Rapid Z reticle it will be very quick for known distances. You use a new crosshair for the new distance. I shoot mine for targets at 100, 200 and 300 and it works well with 168 Federal Gold. Very quick. If you're trying to get more accurate you can make sheets to show any adjustments needed for perfect shots. There may be some change when you change magnification but that seems to be minimal. Still know your rifle, scope and ammo. The only disadvantage to this setup is the 1" tube (which is better for a hunting rig) but provides less MOA. The reticle however takes care of this issue.
I would recommend this setup for a DM style tactical rifle, or hunting rig. Anything where you need good optics, repeatability and a quick accurate reticle. I wouldn't recommend it for competition target shooting. For informal target shooting it works great.
