I have 3 unissued non refurb Russian SKS rifles, all laminated stocks. I was thinking of getting one of those receiver mounted scope mounts put on the least pretty of the 3 so I can enjoy shooting it more, 6-8" groups at 100yds just don't do it for me. Is this a serious drift into bubbaworld....or are SKSs so numerous that one drilled receiver is no big thing. yeah, I know "it's my rifle and I can do what I want" but I still hold ill will at that guys who put their S.I.N.'s on a very nice Winchester 64 and a Brazilian mauser I now own:mad:

if you have the means id pick up a shooter grade first and then bubba that one. leave the non referbfor their value.

I agree, if they are unissued then leave em alone! They're special at that.

Get a shooter grade one...but make sure it has a like new chrome lined bore.

As for having a scope mount installed...I've shot one that had a side mounted POSP Dragunov type scope installed...holy crap, the thing was more than accurate enough.

Pinpoint hits at 200 yards, over and over.

You can get one of those rail scope mounts that don't really modify anything on the rifle so you could put it back to normal if you want. Or get a peep sight to make it easier to shoot.

I think the scope mount is okay, hardly qualifies as Bubbaing. You will enjoy using a good SKS for shooting, more than the bad stuff available in stores now.

Sell it for a $ loss to buy a refurb.sorry does not make much sense to me, sorry.
Yeah, I tried to do this over the summer. Had a nice but frankenpinned nonrefurb I tried to sell in order to get something more bubba worthy. A pile of $200 offers later I decided to just have at'er.

Is a non refurb worth more then a a refurb? is a non refurb more desirable then a refurb? (for the collector).. what am I missing here? I don't see how a non refurb is cheaper to purchase then a refurb.

Bubba your hearts outs.. why even bother to ask if you should or shouldn't bubba a non refurb then.. if it's only worth the same as a refurb to you and can't see that it might be worth more to someone who appreciates something non refurb.. lots of sks out there, enough to go around 2 times over.

Sks, that's why

Realize that not everybody shares your sentiment.. people do collect SKS rifles, and that is fact that even you can't deny.

I guarantee an unissed SKS is worth more then a refurb, and could even become someones safe queen.

Collecting isn't always about the $$ on your return.. it's about PRESERVATION.

I'd do like the others said, get a shooter grade rifle that is in nice shape but a refurb'd non-matching...and do whatever you like to it.....that's what i did as well... I have a nice blued metal, nice wood, not abused looking one from corwin arms that is staying stock, the bbq painted shooter i got from Lebaron gets all the mods and i don't feel like i'm desecrating history :)

Put a Scout mount on it and use it , you won't have to drill anything and you will always be able to return it to stock condition anytime you like in the future.

That is better than I would have expected..congrats

6-8 MOA is what most SKS are capable with surplus ammo. Adding a scope and using good ammo MIGHT turn your sks down to a 4 MOA rifle, maybe better.

Enjoy your sks for what it is. If you want precision then buy a off the rack value hunting rifle.

Stick a Magwedge scope mount on it and blast away. Or, if you really like the side-mount scope job, then grab your drill and have at it. It's an SKS; as soon as someone whines about the sacrilege of desecrating it, just offer them a chance to buy it for a price that makes you happy. Then, when they sidle away muttering about what a heathen you are, get back to drilling. :)

Seriously, guys, if you're that worried about the collectability of these things, then you should be happy every time somebody butchers one into a plinker. That just makes your lovingly-hoarded, kid-gloves-handled specimens that much rarer and more valuable. Then, once there's only 40 or 50 thousand left, they'll be worth a fortune and you can thank the Bubbas! :)
