Do most outdoor ranges allow slug use?

I just passed my restricted and non-restricted P.A.L testing and would like to buy a Mossberg 500 persuader. Will I be able to take it to the range or am I limited with a shotgun that can't be used for trap shooting?

Just fyi I plan on sport shooting and don't plan on hunting this year at least.

I'm from Niagara Ontario and plan to join Silverdale gun club if anyone is familiar.

My range does not allow shotguns. period. (Except during approved competitions) It sucks big time. Some asshats ruined it by shooting crap like T.V.'s and computers then not cleaning up after. How's a guy supposed to practice for a match when your not allowed to shoot then damn gun except during the actual comp. It makes me so mad.....
 
i'm sure most ranges allow them, they are hard on the backboards and will have to be replaced sooner IMHO, if I were using them I would volunteer to help replace them when necessary, seems like a good gesture.
 
At our range we don't have backboards. Just a big mound of dirt. For slugs I brought a peice of my own plywood that could stand up on its own. Then I stappled targets onto it and I was good to go.
 
I agree the problem often faced with shotguns is the rapid destruction of backboards...at my club now they have a metal frame that you slide a garbage bag over top...works great to check the spread of your shot. For slugs, probably a good idea to do the same thing...or use cardboard...it would really mess up a plywood backboard.

same problem at my range, but they were blasting the target stands at point blank. so now, no shotguns. doesnt make sense, if someones gonna break the rules (shotgunning the target stands), than what makes them think the same guy wont ignore the no shotgun rule, its not exactly a busy spot where your likely to get caught. a$$hat's always ruin it for everyone else.

we have the same problem at my range shot guns allowed on the pistol range and some guys blast off a bunch of birdshot at a target stand and its backer
destroying it now we have the material availible to replace them and members are supposed to replace any thing they shoot up but they rarely do this happens durring the week mostly .i don`t have aproblem with them shooting slugs i do too but i`ll pick a target stand thats on its last legs or if the backer gone will just put up a piece of card board or ipsc target.

OSGC allows only slugs on the centrefire range only. For everything else we have patterning boards by the clays area that we can use. Whatever you do, don't get the two mixed up! A fudd will have a heart attack if you do!

out of 10 ranges - 9 will have fine trap/sket range where you can shoot long barrel and will say "hell NO" to any short barrels ... and just one out of those ten will allow you to shot your short barrel with slugs. (Silverdale Gun club is "the one" by the way - we shoot slugs there this Saturday )




What is exactly is your concept of a sport shooting? shooting slugs is not exactly the cheapest sport - if we're talking about Sabot slugs they are $18 average for box of 5. if we're talking about regular lead slugs they are average $9 for box of 5 and probably not as good for sport shooting as sabots. The only affordable spot shooting I know would be trap/skeet - $8 for 25 shells + $5 for 25 clay birds. cheaper is only shooting .22 :)



Silverdale is very good club - reasonably priced membership - very nice people - good service.

I have thought about possibly regretting the purchase and may go with a longer barrel mossberg or like you said just a .22 for my first gun. I just want something fun to shoot and the pursuader looks like fun. Cost is an issue however, the cheaper the ammo is the more i can shoot.

Thanks for the comments about silverdale I'm really looking forward to becoming a member there. Seems like a great club and all the guys that ran my PAL testing shoot there as well.
