well im gettin into reloadin for .45 acp and i've been told not to go with straight lead. let alone semi wad cutters because they won't feed. do i have to stick with regular round nose etc? if so wheres a good place in calgary to go about gettin bulk?

Depends on the gun, if you're talking about a GI spec WW2 1911 you'll possibly have some issues, if you're talking about a ramped or throated barrel probably not

i get my lswcs from russels- 200 grain , made by plains out of gull lake- they feed fine in both my 1911remmy and my colt series 70- you won't know until you try a few, as some do ,some don't, others won't- the dead stock remmy feeds right off the bat, the colt has a polished ramp

Swc

I have a Colt National Match 1911 45ACP. I only feed it cast SWC 200 gain bullets, and the only problem I will have is if the bullets are seated to deep. It will catch on the case.

i'll be shootin out of sti single stack guns. so im guessing i won't have much for problems. im actually in medicine hat, so maybe i could check out that gull lake place :) the guy at russels warned me not to shoot swc just 20 mins ago, hmmmm oh well. said they wouldn't feed well in an automatic

All .45 lead I shoot is 200 Gr Semi Wads, and never have a feed issue related to the bullet. Any feed issue has been a result of bullet depth or not enough crimp. I shoot a Norinco 1911 with stock barrel, and a Kimber Eclipse Target II in .45s.

ww 231- 5.4 to start, 6 top end- right out of the speer 11 manual- that's kind of funny how the guy at russels would warn you not to shoot lead when they sell the stuff- kind of like shooting yourself in the foot- unless he didn't want to be responsible for the non-feed issues- more than likely he was trying to sell jacketed, which go for a lot more - and you don't need in 45 cause the velocity is low- typically i'll load a jacketed at the bottom of a mag just to "clean " out the lead, and give it a good brushing at home- that's a 1/7 round count for those who do such things

I think I've used 231, Titegroup, Clays. Universal, Unique, Bullseye, Red Dot, (and in UK PP2 and PP). These days I use 200 gr LSWC bulleys from Bullet Barn pretty much exclusively, altho used to cast the same design (RCBS mould, I believe).

With a 60 year old WW1 1911, a Series 70, 2 Gold Cup's, Springfield base model, Para P14-45, and STI Spartan, never any feeding problems.

Never.

I last fed a FMJ RN into a 45 auto in 1977.

I often use the same design in 40S&W in an Edge and M&P. No problems.

you could shave with my plains bullets, they're so sharp- nice round holes-far better than the ones i use in my 45 colt, but i'm running darned near max loads-probably depends on how the bullet is cast

FYI Plains Bullet does not have a retail store in G/Lake. You had best call ahead to make arrangements or u will be sitting there on a wasted trip. They mainly supply retailers.

funny medic....my SWC 45s do what they are suppose to. 80% of the time, nice, perfectly clean cut holes.

The Lee ones? Really? On photocopy paper? Or are they that heavy paper that real targets are usually printed on? Maybe we're doing something wrong.

Not saying the Lee's made bad hole but not as nice as they should be. Even when my buddy casts them.

I found the Hornady Bulk 185gr. JSWC ones made worse holes than the Lee ones and are even more ragged than a RN.
