Galil's are still in Israeli inventories, however, the IDF primarily uses the M-16A2 and M-4 variants these days from what I understand. Part and parcel of US aid to Israel. Makes sense since much of their military hardware is US, based on US designs or is compatible with US designs. The Israelis also manufacture pretty decent 5.56mm ammo.
The IDF has at times chosen indigenous designs, like the Merkava program. But yeah, if it's free, and you've got to quickly equip a primarily reservist force able to confront several hostile Arab armies counting up to 20 mln strong, you'll take what you can get.
I've been watching to see a Tavor in use. Haven't seen one yet. Are they in service, and front line?
This article was written in Spring, 2003. Any updates? http://www.world.guns.ru/assault/as30-e.htm
Galil rifles are heavy, and this was a well documened fact among soldiers that carried them. They are provided to those who dont have to carry them for hours on end.
The only place you see Galils in action were in South Africa as the R4 and more recently as exports to many South / Central American countries. Heres a helpful link... http://world.guns.ru/assault/as23-e.htm
Galil was also the standard rifle of Nicaraguan national guard until the fall of the Somoza regime. Many later made their way into the hands of Nicaragua Contras and Central America drug cartel private army as tools of war.
Guatemala army also has plenty of Galil in their armoury..
Israel is under the pressure from United States to buy an american weapons. The israeli military industry was becoming too much of a competition to US and they were trying to suppress it by making sure that israeli army uses US made stuff. Otherwise no economic aid. So the aid money go back straight to US arms manufacturers. If anybody is interested, check the story of the israeli plane Lavi http://www.israeli-weapons.com/weapons/aircraft/lavi/Lavi.html
It was ahead of its time. Reminds me of the Avro Arrow story.
