Do the RCMP carry hollow point ammunition?

I was wondering if the RCMP carry hollow point or FMJ ammunition. I know in some countries it's illegal for the police to carry hollow point ammunition due to the greater physical damage it causes.

In other countries however HP ammunition is recommended for use by the police due to it's superior stopping power, the theory being you will only shoot someone posing an immediate physical threat so it's better to stop them as fast and reliably as possible.

I was wondering what the Canadian position is.

iirc most north american police agencies carry HP, partly for stopping power and partly because ball has a nasty over penetration problem that is likely to injure a bystander

Present use when I last saw an RCMP firearms lock-up (visiting a friend who asked me to remove the bolt from a stolen Savage, after a car chase during hunting season - I happened to be in his neck of the woods, so I stopped in... on the condition that my prints on the gun wouldn't be used to hang me! ), it was all Remington Golden Sabre JHP. This was 3 years ago.

So, whether they've since gone to Ranger or not, it's still JHP - and was for many years prior.

Winchester Ranger is the norm however around 2006/2007 there was from what I heard a problem with the primers in a lot and we got a bunch of Golden Sabre for a year. Both are on the approved list, (along with 124 gr for the Sub Guns) however all we get now is Winchester again. HP for carry, FMJ for practice.

When I was in Ontario in the late 1980s they had recently just switched from 38 revolvers (S&W Model 10's?) to a 1911 in 45 ACP.
I wonder when they switched to 40s?

I would imagine the few RCMP members there still carry their 5946's in 9mm with Rem Golden Sabres or Win SXT's. The .40 would apply to the OPP and the city services though.

My buddies detachment has Winchester Black Talons, SXT and Remington Golden Sabre's in their ammo lockup. Current issue is the Remington rounds.

Current issue is Winchester SXT. The Remingtons have worked their way through the system and all I have seen lately has been Winchester. I think that I have both kicking around my detachment right now, but when we order ammo, Winchester is what is showing up.
