Do u have to break powder pellets?

I got my first muzzle loader for the 2007 hunting season. I used the pre-measured powder pellets. While I used my filfe I just droped the pellets down whole. (this worked fine). after the season someone told me I need to break the pellets up with my ramrod before loading my bullet.

Is this true? and if so what is the advantage to this. My rifle worked fine leaving them whole.

If you are shooting an in-line you most definitely do not break them. By design, Pyrodex pellets are more efficient than loose powder and will produce higher velocities for the same amount. By breaking them, you negate the advantage they offer and may as well be shooting loose and saving money.

Pellets are designed to be loaded unaltered, leave them as is.
