Do you always lap rings?

I've only used Burris rings with inserts in the past.

Is it always necessary to lap scope rings? If I eyeball it and check the fit of the scope to ring for resistance will that be good enough? I will be using a one piece base.

A lot of the time they need to be lapped to do a proper job, but fairly often you'll find a set-up that doesn't need it. I use the 1 inch lapping bar to check for straightness and alignment, and if it slides freely and eyeballs up parallel to the barrel I don't worry about it. It's amazing how easy it is to see a barrel/scope misalignment with the naked eye.
