Local [day] hunts I usually don't bother. However, if I am going any distance or am going to be out for 2 or more days, a backup comes along with me everytime. Never had to rely on one myself, but you can be sure that sooner or later, Murphy will strike! My backup is usually my P14 in 303 Epps. Regards, Eagleye

A little bit of details on my particular situation.

Hunting camp is:
1h15m from my place to my hunting partner's place
2h00 from his place to the "parking"
45m ATV ride / hike in to the camp.

Should something happen and we need more ammo or need to buy something, from camp, it would take 45m (ATV) to get to the parking, then another 45 min or so to get to the nearest sizeable town.

We usually go to for an entire week + both weekends. So if we had a rifle problem in the first weekend...it would suck A LOT

I could bring a Model 94 30-30 but I don't because I don't want to worry about losing a good gun in a truck break in if it happens, so I just bring a little 410 for grouse that would be no great loss if stolen. I'd miss it though. It's shot more game than any other gun of mine this season.
+1, same as me but I leave the 94 in the safe and my Swede comes along if I'm hunting by road.
By jetboat, weight counts, bring the best gun you got that you can live with being sh*tkicked & don't screw it up!

all the backups are of no use though if you forgot to bring along the keys for the trigger locks...OOPS
Been there, done that...
A hacksaw get through them pretty quick.
It's worse when you leave the bullets or mags at home IMO ( one guy I know left the bolt at home.lol).

Carry two or more knives, flashlights, drag ropes, tarps, etc, etc so why not the second rile. Hunting's gonna suck if for what ever reason your primary shootin iron goes down.

Thats all I will take. After the evening hunt people at our camp like to sit back and reflect on the hunt with a few drinks and I would hate to see my best rifle get knocked out of the rack by a stumbling drunk.

I set up a "stumbling drunk perimeter" while mine's warming up with police tape. Once she's up to temp a quick wipedown with Cleanzoil and then put in the hard case under the bunk. ever a fan of having mystuff on display with a mixed crowd or place frequented by drop in visitors. There's always one a** (or more) in the crowd that like to maul stuff.

Yep, always bring an extra rifle, usually my 45-70 Guide Gun. Makes for a handy tent gun at night plus a camp gun for unwanted visitors. Not so much concerned with it as a "back-up" gun per se as now I'm only 2 hours from home in the event of a mishap but it's along nonetheless.
