Do you check headspace in surplus rifles?

Can't say I have bothered. Interesting question though.

Mine functions fine, far as I can tell, but its a Polish m44, bough used from Epps. I doubt they checked it over, as the barrel was black and full of crap, when I got it. Cleaned up alright though. ;)

Russian rifle does not need capitalist head space gauge! Head space is behind rifle sights, finger on trigger, fascist in front. Only puny western rifle needs tools, russian rifle needs bullets and targets, clean with gasoline, motor oil for lubrication, vodka for celebration. Repeat.

If rifle blows up, gather up parts, re-assemble, hand to next peasant.

I checked mine before shooting it. I oiled the chamber, blocked it halfway with kleenex and blobbed just enough hot glue to fill up to where the bolt face should be. Closed the bolt for 15 mins and let it cool. It might take a few tries but in the end I got an impression good enough to set (lightly!) my calipers on. You can also stick a USED casing in with some wax on the bottom, close the bolt and see how thick of a sliver is left when you open it again. Good Luck!

I taped mine to a table tied a string to the trigger shot it 3 times didnt blow up. ITS GOOD! ... felt like a was shooting a cannon ... well ... it is kinda like a canon even on its own lol I LOVE MY M44 !!!

Hahaha best answers ever. If it it blows up I'll just hand it to the next peasant like 5440flight said.

Are you sh*****ng me!!!! You taped it to a table? Ive been told to do that but never to use tape lol!

I'm thinking duct tape right?

Funny as hell and more so because it's true!

Soviet guns were produced with much more punishment in mind than American guns.

There are SVT-40's, SKS's and Mosin Nagants that were reissued 3-4 times to different sides through WWII that still take down moose every season.

"In Russia gun outlive you!

It's funny because it's true. Mosins are tough like an iron-clad club. I have two '91's and 2 m44's, and a few spare bolts. I can mix and match, and never notice. My guess is the refurb crews grabbed a rifle, tried a bolt or two with a dummy round, then married the two with an electropencil, all official-like. It's design is ideal for the man it was made for (potentially illiterate, with industrial or farm work experience) and the harsh muddy springs and martian winter temperatures of mother Russia. During WW1, rifles were ridiculously difficult to produce in sufficient numbers to arm the massive human sea that was the Russian army. It was common to go to the front unarmed, relying on salvaged guns from fallen camrades to fight back. During one visit by the Czar, neighboring units were stripped of guns and uniforms to create an image of modernity for the visiting dignitaries and cameras. It stands to reason that Russian designs had to last- some rifles from WW1 turned up in the hands of Chechen rebels, 80 years after they were first fired in anger, and were seen in WW1, WW2, Korea, Vietnam and later nastiness in the Balkans and Urals.

Mig21, T-34/85, ak-47, Sks, Mosin Nagant, Tokarev TT-33 - use them daily, or leave them un-touched for 60 years- they'll work fine when you need them, they just aren't that pretty.

That was the best and likely most accurate response to a firearm I have ever read.

If the one with the rifle is killed, the one with the ammunition picks up the rifle and shoots. (enemy at the gates)
