Do you check your bore when hunting?

Me and dad were going hunting one day, and the night before I figured I'd give the guns a little clean up.

In Dad's rem 1100, there was a wad in there. I didn't know it was a wad right away.
It was in there as solid as a rock!! It took me about half an hour heating a rod in the fire and trying to burn it out. Eventually I poured oil down the barrel and let it sit for a while and with some elbow greece it came out.

Ir was a wad. How, I don't understand!! Was Dad's last shot from the day before a foul! Really don't understand.
Had Dad fired one more shot on that previous day, or I not cleaned his gun, there would have been an accident for sure.

Now i constantly check my gun before after, and during hunting. I also use tape and fire right through it with my shotgun.

If you are going to lose sleep over it, I would suggest you check the bore after each and every shot. And sell off any pumps and semi's you own.....;)

was it completely pluged if so thats not quite what i was talking about, but still good to know

It was not completely plugged ... but it had magna-porting which weakened that area a bit and allowed debris into the barrel quite easily.

Splitting the barrel back that far is not as common as small bulges close to the muzzle ... of which I have seen a lot. Accuracy suddenly is terrible...

I always make sure. And if I have been crawling thru some particularly rough stuff I stop to check.

A good rifle is worth 5 seconds of my time!

Electrical tape always, after almost finding out the hard way with my first hunting rifle (model 94Winchester) .Put tape over the muzzle ever since.

A couple of wraps of electrical tape and you're all set. If you set back your front sight ramp 3/4", it makes securely taping your muzzle a lot easier.

I always check the barrel, especially after tromping through the thick stuff. Always find little sticks. Gonna start using the electrical tape idea, I guess it's just not for hamsters anymore ;)

yea like any guy is going to own up that he buys extra small condoms :p

I can imagine that same guy asking the clerk for assistance to find those and she then blurts out over the intercom "price check on extra small condoms please"....:D:mad::D:mad::D:mad: No s**t, it happened to me, except she asked for double extra large....

Great thread J/C ... not enough of these lately for sure!
I cannot count the times I have put a gun to my shoulder and thought... "DID I CHECK THE BORE?" I just can't bring myself to pull the trigger if I have doubts. Even on the shooting bench I will pull a bolt or shove a rod down just to be sure.:runaway:

I'm with the "catnthehat" ... tape & a takedown rod in the day pack for sure.
Pro Shot makes a neat & durable little 5-piece take down rod, with handle,
patch loops & adapter. All of their standard jags/brushes attach. Take down length is 7-1/2", total assembled length 32-1/2" ... works on everything from
.22 cal to 10 gauge ! A little pricey, but a great piece of gear.
