Do you criticise other hunters?

I've seen some really inconsiderate bastards over the years; those guys I disrespect.


A couple of situations...


One October we were camped up in the Swan Hills area of central Alberta. Me and a couple of other guys were walking in an old trail to this lake, first thing in the morning. Next thing you know a 4x4 turns in the road and comes up behind us. You would think that with a party of hunters heading into an area that these guys would respect others, but no! They just drove right up and by us and went right on into the area we had worked hard to access...

Now of course I am completely wrong to assume these guys are from the city but it's a prejudice that I admit. Every time I see that I figure they are CITY guys. I see this type of thing from city hunters. It's like they don't seem to respect property rights of landowners in the country and when it comes to Crown Land they do not even respect a "first-come-first-serve" right, but will do the type of thing like drive in on other hunters. :runaway:

But of course there are idiots from town and country... :(


Another time I was hunting in the Mayerthorpe area and the farm along the sideroad I was driving down was posted. Well I came to where some guys had shot a buck (I presume but it coulda been an elk) on the posted land and dragged it right by one of the No Trespassing signs! Like the drag mark wasn't more then 15' from the sign! Amazing gall some guys have... and people wonder why the land gets posted... :confused:


And then there was the incident a couple years ago where some ####### sabotaged my quad by removing lug nuts from 1 wheel, apparently cuz I had encroached on land they figure is theres alone. :rolleyes:



Yep, there's some real #######s out there. :mad:

I AM JUST KIDDING BR

i try to avoid bad mouthing people in general , but when it comes to hunting there are only 2 types of hunters i cant tolerate Poachers*notreally hunters but* and wasters *the guys/girls that shoot the biggest trophy harvest the rack,hide or whatever and leave the rest to spoil in the bush** every other hunter *meat, trophy, weekend warrior, ol timer, mall ninja,ETC* is fine as long as they keep it clean *the bush* and hunt safely .
 
Congrats on the women and kids in camp BR.
Kids in camp can be a royal PIA at times, but watching them grow into responsible individuals is priceless.
Women in camp tends to clean up the language (slightly) and at least some of the BS.
Whole new areas for practical jokes and puns open up :D
Our camp has been fortunate in rearing several young'uns over the years, including myself, although in the days I first attended camp, 'young' was not what it is today. I was 16 I think when I first went to deer camp.

As to picking on others hunting methods, just lets it roll on out the other side of your head. The local camps had us pegged as boozers, and wild shoot at anything types for years, because of one individual. Now, the locals have seen for themselves who and what we are. The tables have turned, and the aforementioned 'individual' is now an outcast.
 
The fact is that hunting takes on many different meanings for those who participate. I personally do not choose to be a trophy ONLY hunter and do enjoy being able to provide meat for my family and friends. This means I shoot everything I see....NO! I don't shoot doe with fawns, nor would I shoot a cow with a calf. But a doe or cow for that matter tastes just as good or better than a trophy size buck or bull. I recently was able to give some of my venison away to a neighbour on the other side of the street who has hunted every year for the last 23 years for deer. Last year he was only able to get out one day, and due to his physical condition while in the middle of his fight with cancer was put on a crappy stand by his gang and got nothing...although his crew did get a couple last year...nothing was shared with him. I could see it meant a lot to him to be able to enjoy at least a couple nice dinners with his wife eating venison ( Button Buck to be exact). This is what hunting is for me, a way to share experiences, meat and provide and enjoy the company of other like minded hunters.

Would a trophy hunter fit well into our crew....not likely! But how each person governs themselves is just that...individual choice. For another to pass judgement on another because of the choice they have made is obviously ignorant and disrespectful at best. Now the kicker.....if this individual passing judgement is part of the industry and others he is passing judgement on are as well....how does this contribute to industry perception? I smell a slander law suit in the works.

As many have mentioned, it is a personal thing on what you decide to pull the trigger on. If it is done legally and with the spirit of fair chase, then it is all good.

I shoot as many geese as I legally can. But I try to only shoot drake ducks. I won't normally shoot a jake turkey, but have no problem pulling the trigger on a fawn or a doe.

It's a personal thing.
 
I would never criticize a hunter for a method of hunting or associated morals as long as it is legal and floats his/her boat.

At the same time I have no problem callling a spade a spade. Arseholes are arseholes whether in a shopping mall or a duck blind.

Hunter critism seems to run amock esp on the internet. The Alberta Outdoorsmen web site can be full of it.
I work at a gun shop, part time, and you sometimes have to shake your head and wonder WTF with some of the questions and requests alot of customers ask.When I was a younger fellow, hunting seemed like a right of passage when being out with our fathers. Trouble today in my opinion is that a great majority of guys under 30 years old didn't learn how to hunt from a mentor or a father. On the one hand its great that gun sales are very strong, and on the other hand you don't need to have any experiece in order to buy a gun. FS
 
dam rights I will, you do something donkeycock stupid around me with a firearm or while hunting and your gonna get a new one torn! hell I even threw a budies rifle over a bank down into a revene 1 morning after relizing he was pointing a loaded 338 at ME and not the moose, his excuse he couldnt see the moose from up on the hill so he was hoping I would point at it for me .......I did as I threw the rifle at it!
 
Well, one of my buddies showed up with his new decoys last season with bright shock pink floating anchor lines attached. I suggested that they looked rather unnatural in the water, creating a tangle of bright pink spaghetti around every duck.

But when he walked 40 yards away and had a #### in plain view in the middle of the flat marsh when there was cover 80 yards away and when his retriever went over and ate it I didn't say anything. I was too shocked.

Its called wisdom Red.

Learning to listen before speaking and keeping that relationship at 75% listening and 25% speaking would solve a lot of problems.

Shooting your mouth off before loading your brain is certainly no way to go about trying to educate.

Many here onm Nutz do, however I've noticed that the more posts someone has typically the less they post because they say more in less words. Thus learning.

Me, nah I don't rain on other hunters parades. But I won't lie for them either and I make it well known to them if need be. If they want to go out and operate shady and I know about it I might not report them, but I certainly won't lie for them if approached by authorities.

Don't confuse my words with complaceny, I pick my battles. but I'm not the bush police either. Seems as though I could call the CO's every time I go to the bush. Pain in the arse some days.:(

It is a lot of work but it's still fun.

What's even more fun its listening to other hunters offer their moral convictions about it when they've never hunted that way. (present company exempt of course;) )
 
When you're walking through a stand of birch and everyone of them has a chunk taken out(Some @ 9-10 feet) you find yourslf wishing you were in a stand and the bears were the ones making the noise. Albertas selective approach as to where you can bait can be a real PITA.
 
only if there ruining the sport for others IE poaching not being ethical or leaving a mess never for lack of skill unless it putting people in danger
 
this hunting section is getting a bit off base:puke: i useto come here to sit and relax have a few beer and to hear about who got what/with what.
nows all i read about who is the most stubborn ass to get the last word in:runaway:

I don't critisize other hunters that is those who take thier game ethnically,and legally.I envy alot of my hunter friends for getting nice bucks year after year.It is poachers who I can't stand,and so called hunters who hunt unethnically.It is a sport of fair chase and if you can't do it fairly you might as well stay at home.:)
