I didn't have to do it yet, but once I shoot a deer by myself it's expected.
This year is the first year I went hunting and got a deer with my uncle who had it gutted before I could blink.
So I have an idea on how to do it, but I'll need definitely need help. After I learn, it's up for me to do it on my own.

I was by myself first I shot a deer, didn't have nobody to show me.I figured it out.I can do a deer in about 5-10 minutes now,I split the pelvis and breastbones.Everything else pretty much the way brotherjack described.
Everyone does their own in my neck of the woods included first timers. With first timers we'll guide them through the process,I think you'll remember a whole lot better doing it yourself than watching someone else.

Havent EVER been able to go big game hunting myself but I hope to get out next season. The problem is none of my buddies are hunters so finding someone willing to teach me any of it (the hunting/stalking techniques OR the gutting) is a challenge. Shooting I can do ;)

Unfortunately I wasnt able to start this season because Im still recovering from shoulder surgery and cant shoot. I WAS going to tag along with a cousin who was planning on hunting but he got called away to work in the oilfield so scratch that idea :(

One day damnit! I cant wait to learn to gut my own kills.

Hookturn-

If you nick the bowel it'll be a bit rank.:)

I think a nicked stomach smells much worse.
I do my own gutting and split the pelvic bone, makes it easier to pull everything away cleanly. I love deer hunting and the jalapeno cheese smokies that I have the meat made into but I also have an allergic reaction to deer hair on my hands and forearms so I wear latex gloves.

I have gutted every deer I have ever shot, except 1!

I was admitted into the hospital, due to a suspected gall bladder attack, and my wife called a bud up at 11:00 that night. He came over, and gutted the deer, and skinned it. The butcher sent one of their guys over to pick it up early the next morning for cut and wrap, and the next time I saw it, it was in a couple cardboard boxes.

I don't mind getting my hands dirty when it comes to cleaning game, and have helped a few newb's get figured out.

Besides, when it's -20 and blowing, the guts are warm!:)

Cheers
Trev

There are still alot of people that shirk their deer-gutting responsibilities, usually in larger camps you can look around and realize some clowns have never done it.
On another note, I purchased one of those "butt outs", at first I laughed when that product came out, however a buddy used one twice in the last few weeks and said it was slicker than goose sh$t, no coring out the pooper or dragging a tube back through the cavity.:dancingbanana:
Just don't mix it up with your wifes marital aids;)

Frist of all, In any of the groups I have hunted, or do hunt with, if anyone ever said "Ewww I just can't do it!..." They would end up being the tool used for the job! Lol.

Second of all, to the people who take them to the butcher with the guts still in, isn't it actually illegal to gut it in a place other than where it was shot? I am pretty sure that is the case in alberta. (Other alberta hunters feel free to correct me if I am wrong...)

Gutted my first one by myself, when I came out with the deer everyone wondered what I'd been smoking. That's when I figured out I was allergic to deer hair.
There's usually someone who's happy to do it, if not it's latex gloves, skin the belly first and into the shower ASAP.
I always 'cored' or as they say in the valley "reamed' but next time I'll tie off from the inside, less chance of getting itchy that way.

I gut my own, always have, always will.I do every animal for my 70+ year old neighbor too...and my ol' stepdad...and my other old neighbor when he butchers a steer...and my buddy, when he butchers a steer...and...and...

It's not a big deal,a deer only takes a few minutes and it's part of the process.
When I'm huntin my own place or close by I hang and skin before I gut.

I know how to do it, but at the camp I hunt out of now a guy does the dressing for me... because for some odd reason he loves it. When someone shoots a deer, he gets more excited than the person that shot it lol.

Camp dresser on the left....me on the right lol.
