Do you have a "Big Bore?"

Since the 444 has been excluded, I guess I have only one "big-bore" as defined: a #1-H in 375 H&H. I run a 260 accubond at 2850 and have only shot one elk with the load. Most spectacular big game kill I ever witnessed, like someone pulled the rug out from under him. He hit the ground so hard that he broke most of his incisors off.

I was more than impressed with the performance of the cartridge. Now if only I could find a stock for it that does not feel like someone is kicking me in the head with a steel toed boot.

Don't own any big bores. Don't want to shoot any big bores. Recoil and accurate rifle shooting are opposites IMHO. If I go to Africa I'd plan on shooting a buffalo with a 9.3x62 because that's the biggest cartridge I can feel comfortable with in North america, and it has a good reputation in Africa. I'm not impressed with power, just the results of a well placed bullet.

With improvements in technology pertaining to powders and bullets, we are able to do more with less. At one time to increase power, the only solution was to go bigger as bullet design had a useful maximum velocity ceiling of 2150 fps. Now we can depend on bullets to withstand impacts up to 2500 fps. If we can get a .375 bullet to expand to 1" with an impact velocity of 2300 fps and penetrate nearly 3', the .500 bullet that also expands to 1" and penetrates to 3' takes a back seat due to the .375's flatter trajectory. The .416 has a proven track record with flat trajectory and good impact velocity, and I would be equally happy with the ballistics of either rifle.

A very interesting observation! Never thought of big bores quite like that, and the theory also seems appicable to smaller cartridges. No wonder the mild 175 grain 7x57 load kills so well, out of proportion to size and "power". That long moderate speed bullet expands to a wide diameter while penetrating deeply.

I have a $100 Winchester 1910 in .401 WSL Does that count as "big bore" or does it also have to have a lot of velocity? I kinda like my short range rainbow gun:D

Two .375 H&Hs, .458 WM, .45-70.

The only one I'd never stoop to using is one of those new fangled .375 Rugers....those are only for people who wear paisley shirts and pink neckties and hunt in ballet slippers.:D

Original "big bore"

I have a Marlin 375win (go figure) It will push a 220 grain fp from one end of a muley to the other just hard enough to break the back leg bone and you can eat around the hole all the way. Couple of other deer, but broadside pass-throughs and still no red jelly.
Shot a Bison and an Elk this year with my new Ruger Hawkeye 358 win. Currently looking for a 375 H&H but not really sure why:rolleyes: this little 358 does it all.

If the big bore 94 in 375 Winchester qualifies, I have one, my friend Smith, GunPro, just refinished it for me, she lived a rough live on a quad with the previuos owner, Haven't hunted with her yet, may take her out soon for a wild boar search.

My old 375 Browning has taken numerous Moose, White tail and Mulie bucks and a couple Pronghorn Antelope when I lived on the Prairies.
My 458 which I sold last year took a Bull Moose and a nice boar Grizzly several years ago by Tumbler Ridge.
My 404 Jeffery has taken a Yukon Moose and a couple Mountain Caribou.

YOU are holding out my friend, not a mention of your REAL big bore??:p

If 50BMG counts as a big bore I have hunted deer and other assorted N.A. big game with 1 , it typically kills things dead.:D

My open sited .458WM #1 tropical kills good, but not what I would call featherweight for packing around.

I have a 470Ne 505 Gibbs 404 Jeffery 458 Lott 458 Win 375 H&H 375 Ruger a 50 BMG: and a 375 RUM not counting lever guns, I hunt with the 375 H&H have shot moose with it. The others I just play with. You might say I kinda like guns with big holes in them. Do I need them No! But you never know.
