Do you HAVE to take off the these pieces when doing an initial clean/greasing?

Just finished putting my m305 back together. I kind of rushed it, didn't take apart the trigger group, flash hider, rear sight or bolt. I just wanted to get rid of the cosmoline and re-grease it. Will it matter?

Can't wait to take out to the range tomorrow. Will be using Federal American Eagle 168gr. Hoping it can reach minute of deer before I make any modifications.
 
first thing i'll strongly suggest is save the American eagle ammo for a different rifle. it has been seen time and time again how the American eagle's budget brass is no good in these rifles
 
Just ensure the firing pin is free moving and not sticking from grease. If it is sticking, instead of disassembling the whole bolt and risking losing a part or an eye, just soak the bolt in lacquer thinner for a few minutes, let it air dry and re-grease the bolt roller. You can use an air hose to blow out the firing pin hole as well.

The M14 has a safety bridge that should ensure the firing pin will not allow an out of battery detonation, but Norinco receivers aren't always to spec.

So just ensure your firing pin is free moving everything else will be fine for your first day out.

X2 on saving the A.E for something else, and making sure your firing pin is free and dry.

Sort out the rest once you've scratched that itch eh :)

I have observed several M305's in action "unlubed". Please be sure to attend to that - clean and dry is not good for several contact points.
 
There's usually a considerable amount of packing oil in the rear sight assembly, if you haven't cleaned it out make sure you don't shoot with your mouth open ;)
 
In what way are some of the Norinco receivers out of spec?

The ones I've handled that are certainly not in spec came in 2012/2013. Not all of them mind you. Evidence of machining/welding and reparking on the right side rear.
EVERY manufacturer of the semi auto m14 has had "out of spec" issues. Even the venerable LRB receivers are not bang on the usgi spec. Ever measure an LRB's receiver ring? There are some LRB fanclub members who would be stunned to see some of the stuff I've documented.... And I'm a fan of LRB hehehe... But enough of that.
 
There's usually a considerable amount of packing oil in the rear sight assembly, if you haven't cleaned it out make sure you don't shoot with your mouth open ;)

And, as always wear safety glasses (and carry a rag, to clean the oil off of them). I got sprayed every time I pulled the trigger until I finally ripped the rear sight apart and cleaned and relubed it. The next two rifles I detail stripped the sights before they ever got near a range.

Yeah, I'm aware of the issues with LRB... it does sound like the Chinese are finally reaching the bottom of the proverbial barrel that was once filled with receivers produced long ago. What are the chances production will be restarted? - Probably none, and that's a shame.
 
UPDATE: The m14 probably would have blown up in my face if I didn't notice the double feed today. I was using the 5rd mags. When I switched back to the bigger 5/20rnd magazine everything went smoothly.

No oil splash back so I don't think I'll be doing any further disassembly.

Can't hit the targets at 100 yards with norinco ammo but I can barely see the targets at 100 yards with just iron sights.

In spite of all this, it's a very fun gun and if a bear were to attack me, I'd feel comfortable having this over anything else I own. I think it deserves a scope now so I can compare it head to head with my remington 700 5R bolt action which is over 2x the price and almost that much heavier.

Thank you Thomas for having the stones to say it how it is. You're absolutely right on the fanboy front and it doesn't stop at LRB!
 
Drop the trigger group and bolt into some Varsol(it's cheap and easy to get) for 24 hours then wipe or blow it off and you'll be fine. There's no need to take them apart.
Plan 'B' would be to take the stock off and drop the whole thing into a tub of Varsol and leave it for 24 hours then wipe off the sludge. No dumping said sludge down any drain.
