I actually thought about using it as a back up for moose hunting. Keep shots close, should be ok. Same power as 30/30.
Yep, I do. I’ve shot a few deer over the years.

I haven't taken mine out for hunting, but I wouldn't hesitate. Adequate punch and enough accuracy for shot ranges I've had.
I don't think that counts as an SKS anymore... I think the technical term is a "Bubba Speshul"![]()
I have thought about it, but frankly it's too damn heavy. I'm sure I'll use it one of these days(just to say I did), but my 270 is lighter and more capable (not to mention scoped) so it gets the nod usually... And my 243 is even lighter...
I hunt deer with my unmodified sks, I sneak up to the deer and poke at it with the bayonet to make sure it is dead before grabbing it to gut it.
So many options!
It's a real problem, I always want to take them all, hunting or to the range. Sometimes I think of downsizing just to remove the anxiety over it lol.
Great! We keep wanting to try it on wild boar. Time keeps escaping us though. One of these days...

30-30 has quite a bit more muzzle energy.
At 100 yards and beyond the X39 starts to catch up, but is still using a 125g bullet.
My question for those using the SKS is , are you just pulling the ball and replacing with softpoint or handloading?
