Not really looking for approval, just wanted to own something other than the typical "Tula Red Shellac SKS". The stock was free on the EE (it has arsenal repairs and is average at best) and I figured I'd f@ck with it and see what came out of it. I like it, that's all that matters I guess. I think my sling is on backwards... followed instructions on YouTube.

If anyone's wondering, I stripped, lightly sanded, stained in Red Chestnut and oiled with BLO. I'll probably rub in a couple more coats. I guess I could apply Poly or clear Shellac afterwards... will see. Monday it's going to the range to have a go at it.

Looks nicer than a lot of the aftermarket walnut stocks and modern wood stocks and much nicer than all the polymer ones.

Bubba, to me, is equal to "rice" when we talk about crappy honda civic with mods that make them look straight out of fast and furious XXVII. Also referred to as "all show no go" :p

But again, nothing bubba from the OP. I'm actually considering staining an SKS stock a little bit darker than orinal

i just stripped the ugly oil soaked yellow finish off a chinese sks that i got from marstar a few years ago for $75. unreal how nice the grain is thats hiding under all that lacquer.

Bubba is a term used for a person who permanently alters or modifies historic firearms.

I bought a Czech VZ24 and didn't dare strip, sand... just sweated the cosmo out and oiled it. Looks amazing. "Bubba" means something different in the Milsurp section.

Tapco stock/mag/scope mounts/etc can still be taken off and returned to original condition, by your definition - that's not bubba either.

Looks good (anyone know what kind of wood the Chinese used), I like the oiled look much better than the lacquer/shellac versions of the SKS. If I get a Type 81, first thing I'm going to do is refinish the wood furniture (in commie red) if it's as fugly as I think it's going to be.

Birch is actually sh!tty wood to work with, doesn't stain well, blotchy... but this one came out pretty nice. I like BLO, makes all the different colours in the wood 'pop'. Blonde areas almost glow in sunlight. Just wanted something more interesting than the boring red shellac finish.

Supra's are "Rice" .... they are certainly "all show, and lots of go"

I've seen some Honda Civic SI coupes go way faster than they should be able to go... dinky car with 200 ponies seems to go quickly.

Unsure why we're talking about this in the Red Rifles section. I'm sure my SKS still has "a lot of go".

Not really anything bubba would do. I redo all my surplus stock with the originally used materials so they don't look like ####. Who wants a mosin with 30% peeling shellac when you have new shellac on hand?

One project I want to take on is mixing up a very light red mix of food coloring and water in a bucket and dipping a stock in it afew times while sanding with 1000 grit then using BLO and amber shellac over it as a sealer.

You can also hand rub a coat of "tung oil finnish" over shellac to make it more solvent proof. Looks identical IMO to shellac and it works over the bullseye or zinger stuff ( i think its dewaxed)
