Do you like my Bubba'd SKS

You can also hand rub a coat of "tung oil finnish" over shellac to make it more solvent proof. Looks identical IMO to shellac and it works over the bullseye or zinger stuff ( i think its dewaxed)

The only Shellac I can find is the Zinsser stuff. Is it any good? I've been reading that you have to thin it or it dries too fast. I have Tung Oil already, but it looks nothing like Shellac. Of course, I don't have the pure versions, they all have additives to make them easier to work with.

Thanks for the free stock

It wasn't that pretty but it cleaned up pretty well.

The zinger stuff work great but you need to cut it. Tung oil finish is differnt then tung oil. Tung oil finish is varathane/oil blend, while tung oil is just oil.

I used the shellac with isopropyl alcohol mixed in at about 50/50 or otherwise it goes on to thick and looks bad. I do several coats and sand with 1000-2000 grit autopaper inbetween.

Not really looking for approval, just wanted to own something other than the typical "Tula Red Shellac SKS". The stock was free on the EE (it has arsenal repairs and is average at best) and I figured I'd f@ck with it and see what came out of it. I like it, that's all that matters I guess. I think my sling is on backwards... followed instructions on YouTube.

If anyone's wondering, I stripped, lightly sanded, stained in Red Chestnut and oiled with BLO. I'll probably rub in a couple more coats. I guess I could apply Poly or clear Shellac afterwards... will see. Monday it's going to the range to have a go at it.

Sure looks like your typical red shellack Tula sks to me

Never seen any bare wood, linseed oiled stocks like that from the store. I've seen Yugo SKS's with oiled wood, not Russian. All have that ugly shellac/lacquer finish.

Maybe you've seen more than me. Most are shiny, red shellac finished that hides most of the wood grain.

If I had a possibly non-refurb Tula like that ^ I wouldn't have touched it. It's a well used stock that I wanted to do a make over on.

Nope it wasn't great but now looks awesome and like helping out sks nutz !!

I appreciate it. Only problem is I'm getting to that age that my eyes can't see iron sights that well... Think I'm going to take a measurement to my eye doctor and tell her to make glasses for the distance between my eye and rear sight.

Shot off 40rds today, no issues. It was fun, just wish I could see better.
