funny the comments about superior cartridges. yes...there are. but then there are superior cartridges to those cartridges. that's a slippery slope of logic to use. it's valid, but with many caveat's and exceptions to temper it's use. ;)
I agree about the "slippery slope" of claiming there are better cartridges. The 30-30 offers enough velocity to do it's intended purpose, no question. I was implying that the 30-06 was a better choice in the comparison as it allows the use of heavier bullets and spitzers for the added bonus of a bit more flexibility. I am certainly not in the "BIGGER/FASTER is better camp".

There were superior cartridges even in 1895 when the .30-30 was introduced. The 7x57, which can still compete with the .270 Win. was introduced in 1892. The "hot" cartridge of the day in the U.S. was the .30-40 Krag. It just shows how far out of step the Americans were in cartridge development compared to Europe.

I love the .30-30 & .32 Spl... mostly because of the M94 and three or four truck loads of deer I have shot with them... nothing carries like a 94 when wading through the swamps and busting cedar thickets.

I won’t say I love it but I will always have a soft spot for it. Shot my first moose with a model 94 and first deer with my marlin. I carry a 7-08 now mainly because I like a little more range without a lot more recoil. I can’t see myself ever getting rid of the marlin.
