Do you need a License to buy one of those 22cal conversion kits

Hello

I was wondering here in Canada. Do you need to have a license ( RPAL ) and use that to buy one of those 22cal conversion kits in Canada EVEN if you don`t have the main part of the handgun that it would go on. I do plan on getting the handgun some time later on but a deal has presented itself in the near future.

Please let me know, seller says no BUT I am not sure and I don`t like the registry.

Registered part is the frame, so the answer is NO you don't need a RPAL or register it. Slides you can change willy nilly.

To confirm, the kit has the slide, springs, magazine and barrel. So NO to have to call and use one`s RPAL info to initiate a transfer to me.

I am advised though that you are required to report change of caliber - barrel length etc to CFO once you do have the registered frame. I don't know, but I'm presuming you could register both as a unit so you don't have to call each time you put the conversion unit on. Best advice is to call CFO and ask. Really friendly folks and way more reliable answers than any on-line forum.

Only if you change the calibre or barrel length for more than 30 days.
 
they seem to be ALL over the place with that I had an AR15 14.5' barrel in .223 changed it to 9mm and 10.5" barrel called it in and they were NOT at all interested in doing anything
 
Hi Shawn

From reading what you just posted. I have to call to report me swapping my 9mm to the 22cal conversion at the range to use it in that configuration for a few hours then when I switch it back to the original 9mm configuration, I have to call and re register it back again.

Doesn`t sound right. The office is gonna be pretty busy if not P____d O_F at the paper work load?

I was wrong, and going from memory. I mixed up section one and two. Here is what it actually says

Conditions

4 (1) Subject to section 5, the Registrar shall attach to a registration certificate that is issued in respect of a firearm the condition that the holder of the certificate shall advise the Registrar, within 30 days after the modification, of

(a) any modification to the firearm that results in a change of class of the firearm;
(b) in the case of a firearm registered as a frame or receiver only, any modification that makes it capable of discharging ammunition;
(c) any modification to an altered automatic firearm; and
(d) any modification that results in the firearm ceasing to be a firearm.

(2) Subject to section 5, the Registrar shall attach to a registration certificate that is issued in respect of a firearm the condition that when the type, action, calibre or gauge of the firearm is modified, the holder of the certificate shall advise the Registrar of the modification,

(a) if the modification is intended to be permanent, within 30 days after the modification; and
(b) if the modification is not intended to be permanent but still exists 30 days after it is made, without delay after that period.

You have read the firearms act right? If you are getting into guns you really should as going afoul of the act can have serious consequences.
