Do you need to clean a new gun?

Hey all

I recently bought a Sig Sauer P226 classic and looking at it, it looks to be be slightly oiled and that is it. I once had a Browning Hi-Power 15 years ago and it was full of thick grease. It was so bad I had to get someone to clean it. Do new guns come ready to go now and if so how can you tell?

The oil appears to be a milky like substance and mostly around firing parts and hammer.

i never have but once i fired my brand new uncleaned norinco 9mill and got sprayed by HOT grease all over my hand.. i still will never clean before i shoot a new gun(wait thats a lie,,i just got a Mosin that i cleaned before i shot, but only cause it was really PACKED with grease :)

When I get a new gun I only have the patience to make sure the barrel is clean, before taking it to the range.
I usually run a patch or two through it, and wipe off any excess grease or oil from the outside.
Now if it's a milsurp from anywhere but TradeEx(they do a good job of cleaning them, before shipping),
then I take them apart and clean the globs of cosmoline that they have been sitting in.
My patience runs thin, but they are usually good to go, in a week or two!:):D

Nooo, I think that's the right context....

OP, that milky white substance is most likely TW25B (I hope so...), the lube SIG reccommends, and you probably got a sample of it with the gun. As for cleaning, it's been fired already by the manufacturer, so.....

When I take a new gun straight home, I take it down to the frame and clean it (but I also love the thrill of the chase when unfamiliar springs go flying across the room.) When I take a new gun straight to the range, unless its packed with gunk, I'll shoot it and clean it later. There's to many things to worry about (global cooling, global warming, overlord lizards taking over, male pattern baldness, etc) to bother obsessing over a few rounds through a new handgun before cleaning. Just my opinion, YMMV.

I'd strip it and give it a wipe to get rid of excess oil and grease, but I wouldn't be obsessive about doing so. Running a swab through the barrel is always a good idea though...you never know what might have gotten in there.

I always do a full strip and clean before I shoot, gives me a chance to get familiar with the gun, but I also do a full strip and clean after each trip to the range...maybe I'm a little OCD when it comes to my guns.

Thanks! I decided to take it apart and clean the barrel and then just take the extra oil off. The hard part was taking the slide off until I realized the mag had to be out first.. It took a good half hour to figure it out lol..

Is that oil Sig gives a sample of any good?

I always take any new gun apart, to get to know the gun. Also, some need cleaning, others don't. I bought a CZ75, opened her up, totally dry. Oiled it up, ready to rock. Got a new CZ97, was already lubed and ready, looked like it was test fired at the factory a few days before (I waited forever for it). When I got my GSG 1911 it had a bunch of white stuff inside, gummed up grease, had to clean it and lube.

I always open them up and see what's going on.

I know this doesn't count, but I bought a Mosin Nagant, ran a few patches through the bore and voila, a super minty bore! Bonus!

As a rule, Yes, open them up and clean if necessary. Some have excess grease/gunk or are bone dry.
