Do you shoot your awesome (fancy) black rifle enough to justify its cost?

Well went out with the KAC SR 15 11.5" today and it delivered here are some 100 yard groups a 3 shot one and about a 30 shot one lol. Made me feel better about not shooting it enough. And to think the 3 shot group was with irons the rest was with my Aimpoint micro. Ammo was 55gr AE 223 and I used my mag as a rest.

I shot about 27k thru my personal SR-25 in the last year and a half - its on its second barrel, and I shot probably 7k personal 5.56mm this year - but I would like to shoot more.

So I was explaining to my girlfriend about how I was getting the new scope for the Tavor, and why this should be an exciting thing, when she asked me:

"You've spent a lot of money on that rifle. Do you shoot it enough to make it worthwhile?"

And while I could have just reflexively said "Yes of course!" I stopped and thought about it.

Because some of my guns I haven't: I don't feel like I've shot my Fabarm shotgun enough, or that I shoot it well enough, to justify the money I put into it.

Because I've been shooting the Tavor for a year now, and I still keep changing stuff around to try new things on it. I finally feel like I'm settling down on it, and getting it to a point where I'm really happy with it as a rifle that I've set up for me.

I'm getting to the point where the money I spent on it was worth it, but thats after a year of tinkering.

To anyone else out there with a pricey black rifle: your converted NR ACR, your noveske, your LMT .308, I ask "Are they worth it yet?" At what point do you say: "Yes, I got my money's worth out of that gun."

I figured it would be easy to prove to the girlfriend that I shoot enough. And it was:

I am taking my new ACR for the first trip to the range today. Hope it will make a good 3 gun replacement or at least equivalent to my AR's! I look forward to putting 1000's of rounds downrange with it over the next year.

You don't have to shoot it a lot to justify having a rifle. I shoot my black rifle enough but I have it for other reasons as well. One of them is that I just love it as one can love a toy. I only use my quad a few times a year too but I still love it. One reason for owning a fighting rifle is similar to the reason for owning a fire extinguisher. You don't buy to use it. In fact you hope to never have to use it. But if you do have to use it, you have it....

Today I put 400 rounds down range between my Sub 2000 and Glock. It will be another month before I get out.

My range time is limited so I have to get the most out of it. Today I was doing something similar to the VTAC 1-5 drill (actually more like a 1-4 with the friggen mag restrictions). Another goal of this range session was to adjust the rear sight on my Glock as it has always shot a little bit to the left. That took a bit of time, but I feel that the VTAC drill was successful and taught me a few things about Iron sights and driving the gun from target to target.

Do I get my money's worth out of my rifles? Yes. But my rifles are not high dollar affairs. I don't have any Gucci kit. But everything works, and it gets used. I'm not much interested in safe queens these days, nor Gucci kit that I'm too afraid to use.

I have bought all my fancy black rifles in the last 3 years. Some I shoot more then others, and some get a bit neglegted, but all in all I am happy just to own some guns without shooting them often as long as I can go out and shoot it at any time of my pleasing.

Were you paying for the ammo? That seems like a pretty excessive amount of shooting. If you shot 6 hours a day, seven days a week without taking any breaks, that still averages out to 238 rounds per hour.

Army. PWT 4 and Gunfighter for 5 days with all the practices for Afghanistan per training. Taught by the two 3VP WO's who wrote the program so we shot a lot more than most. 3 relays of twelves shooters, shooting all 5 mags at least two to three times an hour for eight hours those five days. We averaged about 2000 rounds a person a day including the tests which we did several times even if we passed.

A few years ago, when my AR15 was still non-restricted (okay...maybe more than a few years!) and I used it to hunt woodchucks I thought that it was the coolest rifle going. Once AR's became restricted I lost interest rapidly. I have always lived on a property that allowed me to shoot right behind my house, so although I have a RPAL I have zero interest in restricteds...if I can't legally shoot it at home, forget it. I've had a couple of Swiss Arms (one Target model, one standard), and although I put close to 8000 rounds through one of them, I never really warmed up to it and they're both gone. I also went through a pair of Norc M14's and thought they were a total waste of money. I've never been without at least one SKS over the years, and never will be either. I also think that the 858 is one of the great gun bargains out there and have just under 6000 rounds through mine, with zero problems.

Justification? I don't think of it that way. If I love shooting a gun, I will keep it forever...if I don't love it, it's gone. I shoot almost every day to some extent, but there are only so many hours in a day, and only so many days in a year. Why waste time with guns that don't make you smile every time you pull the trigger? For me, those tend to be blackpowder guns, levers, bolt guns, .22's and shotguns. Black guns IMHO are best owned by friends, i.e. I get to play with them from time to time, but can't be bothered to own them myself!

don't understand what only shooting a firearm has to justify the ownership of it .As far as I am concerned if you like it ,want it , have the cash to purchase it then you can own it and if you chose not to shoot it that much ,that is /was your choice .I personaly think everybody should have something black or slightly questionable just to upset liberals and unite firearm owners .Cheers
