Do you take an alternate gun for big game?

Most of my hunting is close to home so I don't carry a spare. When I do get away for a week at a deer camp. I usually take two extra rifles, one with a peep sight and another in 22/250.

I always bring a variety, Like someone said in earlier post there are grouse to hunt also. Never know also if a firearm is going to fail.

always take an alternate for different circumstances - a bolt for meadow hunting, lever for bush work, shotgun for grouse.

never have i left home with just one gun for an outing, even if it is just a short jaunt for coyotes. During the fall, i will usualy take a scoped bolt gun capable of the 300 yd shots, but also bring my 30-30 or 358 win along in case i get the urge to stomp through the thick bush. There is also a spare available to me most any time i go out, It is a necessity.

I always bring a back up which sometimes is used as an alternate. Depends on my mood or what kind of terrain I will be stomping through. The Savage24 30-30/20GA always comes now and is either another back up or grouse getter.

For birds & big game, local and one day hunts, no.
Moose and/or Deer trips to the B.C. interior, 308 NM Schultz & Larsen with a 30-06 Husqvarna for back up.
Close range conditions when known, Marlin 1895GS, 45-70 and a Marlin 444S for back up.
Upland birds, 12ga. English SxS and a Ruger Red Label 20ga. mag for back up.

im just itching to cash in a tag with it

I take my Rem 700 BDL 30.06 and my Browning micro hunter 7mm-08 neither is my main gun or my backup.It depends on which one I feel like shooting that day.

You hunt in your back yard, so you can use them all.

most of mine were designed by Browning too. But this thread is about alternates, not backups.

I always take 2 rifles with me. If you drop one, and break your scope, you'll have a backup!

When I hunt out of town I take scoped 30-06 for long range, single shot 20 gauge for chickens and 454 lever for everything else.

On out of town trips I take at least two rifles.I alternate between them because a change is nice.

I used to take a spare, but after years of never using it, I don't anymore. I most often hunt with my father, who is also a one gun hunter, but between the two of us, that's still two rifles - one more than is needed to fill the freezer. We practice with each other's rifles quite a bit and I'm sure that if one rifle were to go down, either of us could grab the other fellow's bang stick and get the job done.
