Do you use .40 magazines in your 9mm?

I keep reading about how .40 S&W magazines for certain guns will fit and feed 14-15 9mm. I'm curious as to how many people actually take advantage of this, especially in IPSC/IDPA. Does it give you much of an edge?

Correct me if I am wrong, we are only allowed maximum 10 rds for pistols. Even if you have a 17 rd magazine or more, you cannot legally use it in competition unless pinned to 10-rds. But if you go down south, you can use it depending on which state allows it.

As it stands right now, you are limited to ten of what the magazine was designed to hold.

If a ten round 40sw mag holds 13 9mm luger, you are still legal.

I've tried Glock 23 magazines in both of my Glock 19's (they held 13 rounds of 9). They didn't always feed 100% so for plinking or practice they are ok, but I wouldn't trust them for when it counts.

Legally you can jam as many rounds into whatever mag you want.
The rules of the game may prohibit it though... IIRC Ipsc does not allow it

IDPA Rules limit mags to 10 rounds. When the rules speak of loading to capacity they are talking about 10 rounds in the Mag and one round in the chamber.

As far as I know IPSC limits to 10 rounds + one also.

This is regardless of mag capacity...

I use one glock 22 mag in my glock 17 only because I bought it cheap and it gave me a backup mag for ODP shooting.
I usually only put 10 rounds in it to be consistent with the 9mm mags using it for target shooting and it functions just fine for this.

If I recall...my g22 mags loaded 9mm just fine...ran the conversion barrel...and also pretty sure my HK USP.40 would load 9mm....

BHP works just fine and so does Glock 17 and JR Carbine 9mm.

But for competition, it's not allowed and I think that the 10 rd or 10+1 rules pre-date the magazine limits. I remember being "reminded" of it in competition practice back when the magazines legally held more than 10 rds.

My HK P7 m10 49sw work 100 % in my P13 9mm (13 rds.)
I had a interesting discussion with my CFO, he did not know what I was talking about .
He had to get back to me, and he said I was correct , Mind you I bet 95% of police officers would not have a clue.

CZ SP01, and 75B. Works for both, I use .40 cal mags exclusively in them.
One caveat, don't modify them by bending in the feed lips to hold the 9mm better. They still need to be able to feed .40 cal, or else they are illegally modified.
Stupid as that is.

Actually from a legal perspective it makes perfect sense. If you turn them into 9mm magazines then they can only hold 10 rds of 9mm ammo. They have to actually BE .40 cal magazines and if .40 cal ammo doesn't fit, then they aren't .40 cal magazines :)

I know technically you are illegally modifying the magazine, satisfying the intent to make a prohibited device. I still think it's stupid.

Does not work with M&P. Was a waste of $49.99

what you talking about Willis?
you can overload the 40cal mags and run them in the 9mm just fine.
course dont tell the RCMP, if they hear about it they will ban the 40cal mags just like they did with the 10/22 mags!

i kid i kid!

but couple years back this came up and since i have both mags for both guns i tried it out and it works or worked when i tried it.
i have never had a need to have more than 10 rounds in my mag so only tried it the once.

S&W .40 mags work in my M&P9, yrmv though. It seems some peoples guns will run them fine others won't. They're not 100%, the .40 mags follower sits higher than the 9mm's on the last round and will lock the slide back with one round left in the mag. So you have to drop the slide to chamber the 12th round, at least that's the case with me. I'll see if I can find the link to a thread I posted pics comparing the 9 & .40 mags for the M&P.
