Do any of you guys cook in the bush, in close proximity to where you hunt? I am sick of going back to the camp for lunch, or doing the sandwich and thermous thing. I would like to get a fire going, and make a hot lunch while in the bush, but obviously don't want to jeprodize the hunt. I have heard arguements from people that are yay, or nay. Some say it matters, some say no it doesn't. What do you guys do?

Quite a number of the guys in our deer gang will build a fire while they are on their watch.It hasn't seemed to have affected the deer as they shoot as many deer as the guys that don't build a fire.Don't know if the cooking smells might bother the deer though. Cheers Bac4
 
Sure I have a pop up picnic table for a small gas stove to cook bacon and eggs in my Blind. I think I will get a perculator and make french pressed coffee this fall. All you ####ers can be out there freezing in the rain and mud, Ill be nice and dry and having a feast... :p
 
My Father in Laws gang always cooks lunch in the bush, they aren't close enough to home or camp to realistically drive back for a meal. There have been plenty of deer shot by guys standing over a camp fire. Some of the guys in my camp shoot a deer every year with a fire going, I don't think it spooks them nearly as much as some think, and sometimes wonder if it actually piques their curiosity and brings them in.
 
I've shot game right from our main camp lots of times, somtimes interrupting meals, - does that qualify?

Generally speaking, I don't hunt anything so spooky that a small cookstove and some soup and sandwiches is going to scare it away.

No use starving/freezing for fear of scaring away something that you can't tell is there anyway...
 
I alway has an MSR Wisperlight or a Jetboil stove in my pack. heat up a can of soup, or boil some water for a mountain house meal. i'm on foot all day when I hunt. going back to camp would be retarded, waste my hunting time.

of course some landjager and gorp in the pack is good too. I'm not much of a meal eater when I hunt, mostly snack on the move.
 
Depends on the hunting area, if gone for the whole day I will quite often take a popcan stove to heat up a mountain house de-hy. Nothing beats a hot meal in the fall.
Fighting off the hypo-glycemia is a constant challenge so I take along wannabe trail mix (no nuts) and other snacks as well as jerky and don't forget the water.

And whatever you do, if you are staying out all day pack the TP!

How do you find the Jetboil?
 
i used the original one for one season, then traded it off to a client. I've just ordered one of the new SOL Aluminum ones. I liked it, but only for boiling water for tea/coffee/mountain house. was light and very packable. I'm not a super big fan of the pressurized cylinders, but this system works well for what it is.

thanks I will have to check one out. I have a few Optimus Novas and a hiker, they are nice, but heavier, especially the fold out Hiker model.
 
I knew one old guy who often started a fire while deer hunting because he claimed that it attracted deer. He ALWAYS got his deer, every single year no matter what. And this is in an area that is just bush, no farms and during times when the numbers were so low that entire parties had been skunked. He always hunted alone.
