Does .35 Whelen offer much over .30/06.

Yes, that would be a good idea. The Whelen delivers much more energy than the 06 and the shock value of any. 35 calibre is far more than a. 30 cal.

That being said, the 30-06 is still a wonderful calibre but it's about as vanilla as you can get, and since you have 2, why not get one re barreled? If your muzzle is big enough in diameter, you could also look at having it rebored, which is what I have done in the past

The .35 bore is a worthwhile project... there is not a huge difference when comparing bullets of same weight, but twer it me, I would run the Whelen with heavier bullets... then you would need a "quarter bore/06" to complete the trifecta...

A 35 Whelen shooting a 225 AB has about the same energy at 200y as a 30-06 shooting a 165gr AB does at the muzzle. The felt recoil is lighter than a magnum, and the flexibility to reload great.

158gr plinking rounds, 200gr RN deer rounds, and 225gr for everything else.

I picked up a used model 70 off of here that was rebareled to 35 whelen, Ive got to say it is one of the best cartridges ive ever hunted with. Kills stuff dead fast! big holes and easy on the shoulder, what more could you want! I love it so much im going to build a lightweight 35 whelen for mountain hunting. Its ballistics are so close to the 3006 that a 180 grain bullet is clipping along at about the same velocity as the 225gr does out of the 35.

yeah mate they are a thumper round, if you have a 30-06 an say are using 180gr, make sure you use 250s in the Whelen which will give you the energy an differentiate it from a 06

As the owner of 2 30/06 rifles, would I be gaining enough to justify re- barreling one to .35 Whelen ?thanks
I like 35s as much as any here, but it would really depend on what you are planning on using a Whelen for.

A 30/06 with TSX or Partition bullet really doesn't give up much to a 35Whelen on heavier game and there would be no advantage of the 35 over a 30 for deer.

Funny,I was kind of hoping when I started this thread that someone would tell me I could negate any advantage of the .35 through working up a good load with the .06. I plan on using it on bigger ungulates such as moose and maybe elk in the future. One determining factor is that I have enough .30 cal projectiles of various manufacture to last me a lifetime.

There's a whole lot of truth in that statement.

It'd be an "I want one." thing. The best reason to do/buy anything. It's just a .30-06 with a bigger heavier bullet that doesn't really do anything an '06 won't. Be a pretty serious African plains beastie round though.

Yes it is like the. 30-06, except it hits harder, makes a bigger hole and kills big animals with quite a bit more authority, but otherwise the same.

I had 2 Whelens at the same time as I owned 2 different 30-06 rifles. Shot a couple of moose and one large black bear with the Whelens, and then sold them.

If I am going to push bullets from 225 - 275 grains, I will do so with a larger case. [358 Norma Mag comes to mind]

Not much point in shooting the lighter bullets from a 35, IMHO.

Regards, Dave.

I have two .30/06 rifles now and I used to have a .35 Whelen as well, great round as well. But I feel unless you are hunting larger game all the time instead of once in a while there is not much sense in ditching the 06 for the Whelen. M 2 cents.

I would be tempted to just skip over the .35 and go to one of the 375-06's or maybe a 9.3x62

I partially agree here, I would jump over to a 9.3x62. Out of good rifle with a stronger action, like a mauser 98, ruger m77, Win m70, Howa's you can launch a 286gr bullet @ approx. 2500fts. which gets approx. 3900 ft/lbs, you can also launch 270 gr Speer soft point @ 2600 and 250gr accubond close to 2700fts, that's some serious power there. Another caliber I would recommend would be a 338-06.
