I was just wondering if a Mossberg Maverick slam fires, want to buy one for a G-Bear gun to keep in my motorhome for when I'm in the mountains, if she is not a very good gun, what would be a good G-Bear gun for around the same money?
Thanks for reading,

The Maverick is the Mossberg 500 without the tang safety. All parts are manufactured in the same location. The shotguns are assembled in separate locations. The Maverick/500 will NOT slamfire if it is in proper working condition.

Maverick 88 is good to go-have had one for years and abused the heck out of it. They do feel cheap/####ty compared to even an 870 Express, though. Can't really put my finger on why, have just always felt that way.

I own 2. One with a single action bar and the other has 2. Put both through hell. Dropped the single bar one from a treestand and ran over it with the 3 wheeler (I've had it a looong time) and it still works to this day. Definitely worth more than the selling price IMHO.

I had one with the single action bar. I had a partial out-of-battery detonation of a 3" magnum shell caused by the sloppy lock-up and excessive firing pin protrusion. The insides of the receiver were gouged all over by pieces of brass and steel shot due to the Ka-boom. Had the firing pin replaced and the firearm inspected by a competent gunsmith. Shortly thereafter the single action bar broke at the point it attached to the front pump/handguard. Fixed it and then sold it cheap to an area resident who was fully apprised of the issues with the shotgun. I didn't trust it, even though it was judged to be in safe working order.

I also had a later model with the twin action bars. I use it as a loaner shotgun for friends/family who want to take in a day bunny hunting or duck/goose hunting and don't own/forgot their shotgun. Unlike the other Maverick, this one has run like a top and I've had zero issues with it. I personally wouldn't pick it as my personal, "goto" shotgun but if you're on a tight budget, its an okay choice. I'm much rather opt for a Remington 870 Express, however. The 870 is 10X the shotgun the Maverick is.

After reading all the good things you guys said about the Maverick 88, I went out yesterday and bought one. It looks like a fun little toy. Thanks for everything!
