I believe that they are compatible, a buddy of swaps his around.

8.5 has the barrel band in a differnt place other than that yes (from my understanding havnt done it)

Yup barrels will swap over, even tried for the hell of it installing a left hand 870 barrel on my 12.5" receiver, it fits and locks up perfectly with the left hand bolt but is unable to eject correctly since extractor is on solid wall side opposite the breach.
