Does any fancy Gun oil really help prevent rust?

Just a note. Ballistol is not a rust preventative. Even the manufacturer recommends against it (buried deep in their website). Ballistol is hydrophilic, meaning it attracts and absorbs water. Not exactly what you want against steel.
I use Eezox and Fluid Film. Sometimes RIG.
Fluid Film is lanolin, from sheep wool and I've got some Frog Lube to try out. Let's see if sheep or frogs are better at repelling water.
(I know, Frog Lube doesn't come from frogs.....)
Some of the best performing car undercoating and rust coatings are oily/wax based. => also known as cosmoline.!!!!

G96 is the best I've seen for rust protection.
Things like ATF and CLP are pretty good ( I do use ATF as my general purpose lube/rust protection wipe), but nothing I've tried matches G96 for pure rust protection. That "invisible film" they claim the product makes is actually the real deal; if it is used as reccomended, it does create an honest clearcoat over the metal and it works wonders.

Reliable has Eezox!
I'm wondering why you don't try it out. Simply take two pieces of steel, (not galvinazed) coat with what ever leave it out side for 3 days and then check it out. I would bet the sythetic motor oils will be right up there with your EXPENSIVE gun oils.

There are many products that will prevent rusting of metal parts, but some of them leave a heavy or noticable coating or film.
Any product that remains wet will also attract other foreign materials to it, like lint from a gun case or air bourne particulates etc.
One products that works well is Eezox, it is a light oil, when the carrier drys it leaving a dry protectant barrier which work well.

Id avoid ATF, could damage some non metal peices and its got too many detergents in it to trust as a protective film
Not speaking from experiance here but knowing whats inside i wont trust it on metal finishes either.
Mixed with acetone and it will work wonders on stuck bolts
Or pour it down your intake to remove carbon deposits ( careful, dont do it unless your familiar witht the process )

normally its 25-30$ for a 18oz can if i remember right.
before i used cheap solvant and oil, i buy 1rod kit a year and i choose the one that come with little bottle.
i say unless you live in a lake, or you stand under rain during hours, its not important what you use.
i saw more firearm that rusted in gun cabinet-safes than the one used in the woods.

I have been using Eezox now for six years, my rifle has not been lubricated for 5 years, I hunt northern Saskatchewan in the last two weeks of November every year, it's been 5 years since I treated my gun and it has not shown signs of corrosion yet, in and out of the cold, the only care has been to dry out the bore after the gun has warmed up indoors and stopped sweating. It took me a few hours to do the Eezox treatment initially but after it was applied and left to dry it is invisible, actually hard to believe it is even there but it works, I think this year I will strip it down and give it it's second treatment. Keeping my guns rust free in the cold was always a problem because any lubricant we used always stiffened up the guns operation in the cold, so operating dry was the most reliable way to hunt but now with the Eezox corrossion has been wiped out of my mind.

Check the links. Synthetic motor oils are poor at rust protection.
I did my own tests years ago. Used all types of oils and greases. RIG was good, and even WD-40 did a reasonable job. Motor oil, not so much.
From the 6mmBR test, 15hrs

This may mean less maintenance but does not eliminate it. Remember that the "guts" , springs etc. will not be stainless steel and will rust if not protected.

For me. Stag Syn Frigid Blue Gun oil. Been using it for 45 years and nothing better for what we see and yes I have many of the others also which are OK. I am in the same water and air a ferry away from you. Keep a small terry cloth in a zip lock bag soaked in it and give the gun a wipe after every trip out and you will have no problems.Plus use it after you clean your gun fully

What do I know about gun rust nothing since it has never been a problem for me but do know a bit about automobile rust and that is why I am still driving my 70 chevelle bought here in 1973 and my 89 dodge ram 4x4 every day winters included and it is still original paint. The truck gets hit with crown, rust check, line backer and rope oil.Heavy stuff one year and the spreading stuff the next. The salt on the roads was enough to kill all of them 15 years ago but mine is still mint

WD40 the winner there, not "fancy" at all.
Do that test in eastern canada where we wash the salt off our windows here in july and it would be different . I would not use wd-40 to try to save an old piece of rebar let alone a gun. But to each thier own
