Does anybody own both a .308 Winchester and a .338 Federal?

And can you chamber a .308 in the .338? I'm thinking still of getting myself a .308, but I'm wondering if in a stupid moment a mistake could happen. I suppose a guy could use nickel cases for one and brass for the other to stay safe, but I'm curious how easily an accident could happen here.

Label your ammo and don't carry both on you at the same time. I'm sure there's lots of guys that have 2 rifles based on the 08 case, or the 06 case or even the mag cases.

I have 3 .308's, but they won't take the same ammo, as they're loaded to different OAL's, so I need to watch what I'm carrying too.

What are you looking at buying??

so if you dropped a 308 into the 338 Fed and dropped the pin what could happen?..it'll just blow the neck out a bit, maybe split it, won't be that accurate..but it won't hurt anything....and I can't see even the most determined moron closing the bolt on a 338 Fed in a 308 chamber.....

I have two 7-08's and a 308 and never had an issue. Like Rembo said you shoot the small bullet in the big hole, oh well, shoot the big bullet in the small hole.... good luck getting the bolt closed. I label my ammo boxes clearly and always read them before I pick them up. However I've never had those rifles together on a huting trip.

"...can you chamber a .308 in the .338?..." Yep. The Federal is just a necked up .308.
"...just blow the neck out..." Instant fire forming to .338 Fed.

Pharoh, I just chambered two different types of 308 Winchester ammo in my Sako 338F. Slight resistance on bolt close, that is it.
