Does anyone have any practical information regarding the scsa taipan x (anyone use it to hunt deer so I can justify it to the wifey?)

The Taipan are well built nice rifles I’m sure you would like it
The Renegade is another option that is made in Canada

I am very compelled to pick up one of these, since I have heard generally good things about it (the X anyways, not so much its predessesor the Lite).

I find it interesting this is available in Australia, given the fact that pump shotguns have been banned/difficult for the average person to get since 1996.

But of course buying of these things gives me room for pause with recent developments in Australian gun laws, the latest of which were large scale gun legislation changes, which I think went through yesterday. I didn't catch all of it, but limiting people to 4 guns per person and cracking down on more makes and models and of course, the usual "buyback" / confiscation plans.

What is slightly more disconcerting is that the whack job evil animals that perpetrated Bondi Beach massacre, used straight pull firearms. Sure, Aussie gun laws different than here, but being similar commonwealth countries, a lot in common with their positions on firearms.

If the Taipan X was a bit cheaper, I may have sprung for it earlier. I did hear though that it works best with PMAG Gen 3s. But even then I am leery that something can use PMAGs because seemingly the feds here have been cracking down on use of mags that can potentially take more than the obligatory 5 rounds.

Still I may still get one of these since it is .223 Wylde so I can have something to use up my 5.56 ammo.

I did have an MRA Renegade and I sold it - the straight pull didn't do it for me but that was a while back and lots of changed. The fact that it straight pulls and also pumps is interesting. I heard the trigger leaves a lot to be desired and it doesn't work with AR triggers, which is fine since I don't have one lying around anyway.

I bought one of these this afternoon. I like the weight, the balance, the feel. The lock back and release mechanism will take some time to get accustomed.

No manual included, which I really am not liking how more companies are referring to the consumer to scan a QR code.

The one glaring thing I can say for sure is that even though the box included a PMAG, 30/5, it was a GEN2, and I can confirm that it does not seat properly, which would have been a bummer if it weren't for the fact that I have a gazillion PMAG GEN3s, which seat slightly better though it requires some force to get it to seat.

While I was at it I thought I'd break out various mags, and here's my results.

PMAG Gen 2 (included with the rifle package) - DOES NOT SEAT AT ALL, EVEN WITH FORCE
PMAG Gen 2 (windowed, other ones I have) - DOES NOT SEAT AT ALL, EVEN WITH FORCE
PMAG Gen 3 - SEATS WITH FORCE, and that doesn't mean a good sudden whack - it means a lot of strong upwards pushing. It does not drop free though
Duramag metal mag - 30 crimped to 5 - SEATS WITH LIGHT PRESSURE, DOES NOT DROP FREE
Duramag LAR15 Metal mags - SEATS WITH NO DIFFICULTY, fits perfectly, DROPS FREE
MFT LAR15 polymer mags - SEATS WITH NO DIFFICULTY, fits perfectly, DROPS FREE

I will bring it out to my club on the weekend.

Id have a tough time paying full price for one (i won mine on sfrc) but that's not to say the quality isn't there, this rifle feels great and is well made, aside from mag issues that can be remidied if you please its been solid.

I address the magazine fitment issue in another taipan thread here,

I dont hunt, but if i did I'd use a .223 i already had for island deer, i think using the taipan would be quite cool for the application

Thanks - I am going to post this on the other bigger thread and follow that one since it seems to be the primary one for the Taipan.

I have enough Gen2 mags I can try to file one down in the space you mentioned. My Gen 2 does not seat at all whatsoever. Strange that it was included with the rifle.

Here is justification…” honey , as you well know…the c@nt Carney has banned most guns worth a damn in this once great country. As such , I’m buying this! I hope you like it…it should be here next Wednesday . Be home as mailman needs a signature as it’s a firearm delivery”…and THAT …is how you deal with THAT

I know at my local store it comes in 223 and 300 blk / aac
Check your game laws for minimum cartridges. A hundred years ago when I took the course, 223 was considered much too light for big game. If you are buying something clearly for hunting, it should be more than enough gun, to paraphrase an African dangerous game hunter.

From a fellow who i know runs a gun store they are 50/50, half of them work and you will never have an issue

The other half are garbage with feeding issues that probably wont be resolved as parts are unobtainable from the manufacturer

I wouldn't touch one nor would I buy the Troy PAR

Just my 2 cents

Out of curiosity, if North Sylva is the importer and would provide the warranty, wouldn't they be responsible for stocking parts for the guns they distribute?

I have 3 and they all work just fine. Maybe I got lucky?

They have a few annoying quirks such as the bolt hold back but as far as load, shoot and eject they work fine.

Thats how I roll - isn't that normal?

I'm waiting for the EVO model ... and the second it's available I'll be ordering one.

I kinda recall watching a review on the Evo and I am pretty sure it could take AR triggers.

That *might* be enough to tip me over the edge.....

Based on all the reviews I have seen and what I have read, only the EVO natively supports AR triggers. The X does not.

That said, I am really enjoying kitting up my Taipan X. Yes, I will never forget that it is not a semi-auto, but the look and feel of it - I like this manual action pump over the straight pull of the MRA Renegade. I put an LPVO on my X, and just installed my lights and tape switch. The ergonomics are decent EXCEPT the location of the bolt lock/release thing.

The EVO apparently fixes all these with an AR style bolt lock/release, as well as an improved stock and grip and storage for an additional mag. I will no doubt get an Evo when it comes to Canada, and hopefully funds deployed there would have been the right choice over the 2026 version of the Mini 14...or er, I mean the Akdas Alcor, which I have been so waffling to get, but everytime I head to the store, I turn back around halfway or less and go home. I just cannot bear another safe queen.

I am hoping the Evo natively works with PMAG Gen 2 and 3. Regardless, will get one once it gets released.

I figure if the Australians can have it, it's a lower risk proposition here.
