Does anyone have tips for removing the blue from a barrel?

I picked up an old 870 23" barrel with a poly-choke from a cgn-er. The blue is rough, and I plan on dura-coating it when I do my other barrel and receiver, so any tips would be appreciated.

Sandblast it if you have access to a sandblaster or sand it by hand if you don't. It isn't a question of so much as removing the bluing as it is of roughening the surface to help the coating stick.

I don't have a sandblaster, so I'll try the vinegar since it's in my cupboard. If not, it's off to Canadian Tire. Thanks fellas.

exactly. You can coat it in ketchup if you feel the urge but you still won't have it prepped for a spray on finish regardless of whether or not you made the metal change colour.

save your money for getting it blasted. Find a small local fab shop and I bet it won't be more than 20 bucks. It's a five minute job

scotch brite pad

X2 on the scotch brite pad.
I used the pad and WD40 and it worked great. I only used the WD40 because it was handy but I stripped a barrel down to bare metal in no time. Next is to order a blueing kit and reblue it.
Havn't done a whole barrel before and am looking forward to doing it.

Preferrably bead blast. It gives a much smoother finish and less risk of eroding the metal.

I did the receiver and barrel on mine with fine sandpaper and reblue with the cheap outers blue, came out looking pretty good

Fishingismylife- If I remember correctly, you had the thread which gave me the idea about duracoating it, the 870/Grizzly build? Where would I find trustrip?
