Does anyone hunt deer under 600 yards anymore?

All the deer I've shot have been under 100 yards.

A 1-moa gun (most aren't) is going to shoot 6" groups at 600 yards. That's assuming the shooter is shooting from a sled, which they aren't. Probably closer to 10" off the shoulder.

Summary: A lot of people spew BS.

LOL...I don't think anybody is taking off hand 600 yard shots!

I know an awful lot of hunters and competitors, most can’t hold 10” at 600 yards offhand!
I know I sure can’t and I shoot offhand at 300 meters ins regular basis with a match rifle

I practise with my hunting rifle at 300 so when a 100 yard shot presents itself it is automatic for me.

As an ex- long range hunter ( more than a few kills past 900 yards) one thing many do not take into consideration is time of flight.
Same as long distance archery shots.
A bullet moving at 3,300FPS is still going to take a bit to get “ out there”
And all an animal has to do is take one step and it turns a kill shot into a miss or worse, a wounded gut shot critter that you may or may not recover !
Another is being able to reliably put the bullet where it is supposed to go , many cannot do it reliably !
I still shoot at long range , but I keep that shooting for my target rifles on paper and steel.

Was there a particular experience that changed your approach?

I've not shot meat critters past 120 yds or so. For pest critters though the range is as far as my eyes and equipment will allow for a clear shot, and
these days the long shot distances are gettin' a whole lot shorter. Sucks gettin' old. :runaway:

I'm a new hunter and despite is technically awesome to shoot 600+Y, I also find amazing to be able to remain concealed in close quarters with the objective, to be able to track your deer and get close to it is an art.

i've shhot 2 deers both in less of 75 Y

Closest animal I’ve shot was likely my bear this year at 18. Longest ever big game animal was also a bear at 370 yards. Longest shot ever was well past the 370 yards when I was predator hunting ( yup lucky shot ). Most shots I take are between 80 and 200. Same for all the folks I’ve hunted with for the last 40 years.

I do know people who regularly take game at longer ranges, these people practice a lot, and know their gear and its limitations as well as their own.

Hunting for 40 years with other good friends. I have seen many taken. Longest shot maybe 300 yards. Everything else a lot less. Plus 80% of the deer I have taken has been with a muzzle loader in the early season.

I hunt mainly with my crossbow which requires me to be much closer than that distance. Even with a rifle, I seldom see an opportunity farther than 300yds. Depends on the terrain you're dealing with.
