I have 20 of these casings . there marked Winchester No.12 they have funny edge on them. Any info. Please

just googled it, and in another forum someone mentioned that these are WW1 "sawtooth" 00Buckshot casings. I've never seen these before, just going off google results
 
They look quite a lot like the Greener "Police Gun" ammunition. Greener made some specific ammunition that was bottle-necked about an inch above the rim, necking from 12 to about 14 guage. They were often loaded with large shot/buckshot and had a partially folded crimp with a over-shot card wad.

Have seen quite a few no.12 over the years but none with the saw tooth end like yours. Straight cut no. 12 shells sell no problem for about $4.00 each.
I am not sure if yours are worth more or less??
 
Winchester hasn't used that particular headstamp for the better part of a century. These are cases designed for the military Buck load which was used illegally in combat during the Great War (violation of the Hague Convention). Sometimes you run into them as loaded rounds, but they are few and far between; even fired ones are scarce.

Must be lots of guys wanting one or more of these for a WWI collection; they are a desirable and hard-to-get item..... and they just hain't makin' no more o' they.

I found a few of those mouth types out in the training area in Pet. but they were rifle sized not shotgun size. Can't remember much about them but I think they were a rimmed cartridge like the .303Brit.
 
Smellie - The legality of shotguns has been debated back and forth. Some countries (eg the USA) have produced legal arguments that they are indeed legal but others have said no. To the best of my knowledge, nobody has ever been tried criminally for using one.

The Conventions have specific prohibitions WRT explosive rounds that are under a certain diameter or are likely to flatten on impact, but I'm unaware of any ban in them on shotguns. As to the general prohibition on things causing unnecessary suffering, I'm not sure how a man hit with 00 buck is worse off than one who's been shredded by a mortar round or had a 5.56mm mag emptied into him.
