Where do manufacture loads set? I'm loading 95grn .243 Nosler Ball.Tips over 41grn of H4350(best acc.) Lee second edition lists 42grns as max. A few weeks ago I bought some Win. Nosler ball. silvertips, pulled one open to see how much powder was there, 43.3grn of a semi-spherical powder(+/- some spillage). Now I know that different powders have different burn rates, which will vary the amount of powder that is actually max load. Don't know much about "BALL" type powders, pretty new to loading! Just wondering if this much of a semi-spherical powder would be some where in the middle of a min/max load!?!! Being that it is a Win. load, would it be Win. powder? Thanks for any helpfull input!!

Factory ammunition does not use canister grade powders. The ammuntion is tested with the bulk lot of powder used to insure that it meets all the standards expected for performance, pressure, etc. The weight of powder used in a factory cartridge is irrelevant to handloading - you won't be using the same powder, it isn't sold in commercial packaging. It is not a question of the load being min/max. The charge is worked up to meet the desired, published performance level. I do not know if Winchester ammuntion is loaded exclusively with propellants manufactured by the parent, Olin Matheson Chemical. They could outsource supply.

Its been a while since I bought some, but Higginsons was selling factory overruns, such as H414SL10 which is almost identical but just slightly slower than W760. The H414SL10 is also much more temperature tolerant and gives extremely consistant velocities. They had and probably still have a couple of others as well. They will supply you with reloading tables or the closest burning rate table to work with. They won't sell 1lb cannisters, only 7lb minimum per powder type.

This isn't something a newbie should just dive into, without someone with more than just a little experience undr their belt.

Higginsons has a wide range of other products by the way and is also Canadian, so for those of you that are financially challenged, a group buy of powder, components and other things can be a good idea. bearhunter

Canister grade powders are blended to achieve a consistant burn rate.Though you have to wonder about Bofors, the maker of Aliant Reloader 22 and Norma powders.;) The manufactures blend the powders themselves, something like a #200 of 4350 type and a #100 of a 4831 type. There have been cases them using of canister grade powders, like IMR 7828 in the 264 Winchester.
